This past May was filled with remembrance activities for
my family. In the middle of the month, we made a quick trip
to Virginia for the funeral service of my wife, Michelle’s,
uncle and godfather, Colonel David A. McNerney. He was
a retired colonel in the Army and received a full military
burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Very moving and
impressive to say the least. (The military has an average of

35 funerals per week at Arlington!) He was a West Point
graduate, Vietnam veteran, and former commandant of the
Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and
one of that installation’s first inductees into its hall of fame.
(https://www.dliflc.edu/about/hof/hof-inductees-2006/). I
had the pleasure to first meet ‘The Colonel’ when we were
in Crystal City for the 2011 reunion. While at Arlington
Cemetery, we also watched the changing of the guard at the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as a wreath dedication
by some local schoolchildren.
Two days prior to Memorial Day, we helped place flags
on the gravesites of veterans at a local cemetery as part of an
annual Boy Scouts event. That same cemetery was the site of a
large ceremony on Memorial Day. Aside from the usual gaggle
of politicians, there were some very moving presentations.
The keynote speaker was a Marine Chief Warrant Officer 3,
Amatangelo 'AJ' Pasciuti, who shared a very heart-wrenching
story of a comrade and friend who ultimately lost his life in
Afghanistan. It was incredibly moving.
Wishing everyone a very happy 4th of July and I look
forward to seeing many of you in St. Louis at the end of the
month. Until then, stay safe and healthy!

Happy July to all of you! This will be a short column as
I’ve haven’t received much in the way of news to report, and
I’ve had limited time lately to spend researching what to write
about. I’ve been busy with a family emergency, traveling out
of town, and last but not least, dipping my toe back into the
working world. I am semi-retired, but the management for
a project that I worked on from 2010 to 2019 at Redstone
Arsenal, AL, asked if I wanted to come back to help them out.
