In our opinion...
Satan's vote counts
The courts have made it virtually impossible to have any
kind of prayer in the schools, unless it's silent prayer that is
done unknowingly.
Students and faculty members who want to pray should be
able to practice their religious freedoms. They should be allow-
ed a time of silence if they wish to exercise this freedom. Any
person unwilling to partake of this may leave the room.
Schools should be allowed to set up Bible study groups and
religious clubs.
In order for our schools to hold such functions the Supreme
Court must approve an amendment and it has repeatedly refus-
ed to do so. A Supreme Court ruling in the 1960's outlawed the
daily Bible readings and prayer that had been practiced by most
school districts.
Our courts permit Klu Klux Klansmen to march on public
property...but prevent children from praying in school. We
give a right to the KKK to practice their beliefs on our streets,
yet prohibit the act of religious freedoms.
We as citizens must put more pressure on our congressmen
by writing letters to them and showing our concern for the
passing of a prayer amendment.
In the first amendment of the United States Constitution, it
states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an
established religion, or prohibiting, the free exercise
thereof...."
If Satan could sit in at a Supreme Court ruling concerning
prayer he'd probably say "keep up the good work."

People often ask journalists
why they stay up until 3 a.m.
or all night long sometimes
just to get the newspaper out
on time. Crazy people, right?
Right! It's all worthwhile
though when you hold the
black and white pages in your
hands.
It was especially so last
weekend at the Texas Inter-
collegiate Press Association
competition in Arlington. The
midnight oil burned by the
'Texan staff was well spent.
Texan's midnight oil burns bright;
morale needs administrative support
We returned with two General
Excellence awards and several
individual recognitions.
I'd like to thank the staffers
and the advisers for their
diligent efforts and care for
publishing a newspaper. Every
person on the staff con-
tributed to win these honors.
The enthusiasm of the up-
coming sophomores was also a
happy sight. It may have been
just what they needed to kin-
dle a long term interest. They
began setting goals to jump in
next year and win again.
They're all winners.
We know that journalism
isn't one of the highest paying
professions. However, there's
a point to argue because the
self-satisfaction and happiness
in doing something you truly
believe in, is a pretty high
salary in itself. It's compared
to the feelings of the drama
cast after a long rehearsed pro-
duction is performed before
the audience.

While on the subject of
positive results, it's in order to
look at the college we attend.
WTC has marked its spot on
the map. Several areas have
excelled in the past.
The judo team has captured
two national titles, the golfers
have been national contenders
for the last seven years and the
men's rodeo team has com-
peted on the national level

Dusters have been conference
champs in four out of six
seasons, while the Westerners
have rallied at nationals six
times, two of these in the
championship.
The Psi Zeta chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa has received ten
distinguished awards including
the office of state secretary

the national president of the

department has won over 100
competition awards and four
General Excellences.
I would hope that an institu-
tion with such strong teams
and organizations would
struggle to keep these activities
top notch. But the administra-
tion can juggle with faculty
members just so much until
initiative and enthusiasm
behind the instructors and
coaches will slide away.
WTC has a good thing go-
ing with a quality faculty that
cares for the well-being and
growth of each individual stu-
dent. The administration must
stand behind their staff's
endeavors in order to maintain
a high morale and a pro-
gressive attitude on campus.
