A prominent lumberman, when approached this week by the n«ws(
with a4request for. an expression as to the situation since last
"Just repeat what you had to say last week and. you will cover the
about as fully as it could be coiuu-ed, as there have been no new develi
worthy of mehtlon." Others said about the same thing, apd the '
simply Inscribe "ditto from last week" and call his revelew finished.
There haé been, perhaps, a small slacking ofT in orders from the|
this week, due...no doubt, to the teavy rains that' have fallen throu
state, making it impossible for lunAer to be hauled out from the k
in town to the country. As soon as weather, conditions become no
it is anticipate^ that the demand for lumber will Increase very
much as there have been good corn crops made and every indication !
cotton crop.
Compared to the stocks usually carried at this season of the year,
at Orange are practically bare of stock, and the same condition is
from all oyer the yellow pine district except, perhaps, at some oí
along the line of the Kansas City Southern railroad, where stocks
cumulated because of the inability of the" road'to furnish transpor
ties;. As there is no likelihood of an improvement in the transportat
tion, these stocks will be of no benefit, as lumber on a mill yard is of ■
sen'lcse to any one if 1t.cannot be moved. ;
All of the mills have an abundance of sawing orders and the majoriti
fñill cuts Is going dlrept from the saws to the cars! or through the
and planing mill to the cars, and there is very little surplus for storing
yards. . .
.There has been, quite a revival in the railroad demand and raili
^tructlon material is again forming a goodly proportion of the shipme
TOfcward from the *mlUs at this place. There has been an improvemeil
in prices for/ailroad material as a result of the large amount of
of business' that has been placed within the past thirty days.
Considering th.e situation from every viewpoint, there is no
moderate the^prediction previously made in this column that the d«
lumber for the balance of this, yea^ is going to be extraordinarily larg
the same time, will be hard to fill, on account of broken stocks and >{
service.
NOTES PROM THE BEAUMONT LUMBER MARKET;
Beaumont, Texas, August 3-^While not as much is' being said i
the lumber industry as before the oil boom, the lumber interests
form one of the mainstays of this city's'prosperity. The«p Is an '
amount of lumber used locally here, ip addition to the large shipme
go abroad and some of ^he most important concerns of th&. Bouthw«
their headquarters In this city. *.
One of the hustlers in the lumber business here, who never lets a
get away from him is Ben S. Woodhead, general sales agent for thl
Lumber company. 'Under his direction the sates department of this ef

keep up: with the orders. Mr.'Woodhead has just >ecentiy returne
Arizona, where he went oq a hunt for big gam« and, as usual succ
turning with a big order for early shipment to that far away portion '6Í
Sam's domain. Mr. Woodhead states that the Keith company is
ship 4,000;000 feet of lumber during the month of August. This la. *
rapid, para for a concern that has only been in business for a few mpa|
they have pace makers at the heads of their departments.
. C. E. Walden, who Is in charge of the sales department of the
company, has recently" returned from an extensive trip and again
work of his office well In hand. The Sabine Tram company's big
DeweyvtUe is Wept hustling to fill the orders coming in through the s
partment, but they have á large capacity and can turn out a lot of j
every month. The Sabine Tram company has been filling a big set
the World's Fair buildings at St, Louis and have sent several million ]
lumber into that city within the past, two months. This com
reputation for first class manufacture, which makes the
popular. • • p
Among the rapidly growing concerns of this lively burg ls 4he
oNabers Lumber company, ,who are doing a thriving business. They hai
an especially large local business, their local sales department being la]
.of popular Leroy King. They have been supplying! a large amount of i
to. Sóur Lake since the beginning of the boom there, being one
get Into that field. The mills of this company, are putting In
turning, out a lot of lumber. - ' .
Arrangements have been made for the building of a 35,
mill at Saratoga, the projectors being Fred iLlgon, Cllnjt '>
three others. They have secured a mill site aiid a fine strip of
P$ct to have thjalr mill In operaUon with in six or eight weeká í
goes along as they exp'ect. k '
The Nona Mills company report their big mill at Leesville,:
