Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 7.—Indiana's
legislature convened today for what
probability be the most im-
portant 60BBion in years. The demo-
crats have a majority and will elect
a United States Senator to succeed
Senator Hemenway, whose term ex-
res March 4th. Present appearances,
indicate the selection Of John Worth
Kérn, who was the democratic can-
didate for vice-president in the last
national campaign.
Among other candidates who * en
tered the race when if became evident
that the democrats would control tfie
next legislature were L. Ert Slack, of
Franklin; John E. Lamb, of Terre
Haufe, and former congressman B. F.
Shlvely of South Bend. Thomas Tag-
gart, former / chairman of the demo-
cratic national committee, was alBO
talked of for the place, tout volun-
tarily retired from the race.
"The supporters of some of the can
dldates are taking the position that
Mr. Kern waB sufficiently honored
when given the vice-presidential nom
lnation, and, on the other hand, Mr.
Kern's friends are asserting that his
acceptance of that nomination amount-
ed to a sacrifice which entitles him to
receive the senatorial toga. Slack Is
a young man and is making an active
fight for the place. One of his quali-
fications, according' to gossip of ^he
contest; is that he "looks, acts and
talks like- Senator Beverage;" As
Beverage is a popular idol in his .state
and well thought by democrats, this
Is regarded as' an asset.

Governor Hanly, the present republi-
can chief executive;. was alleged to
favor state Wide prohibition and the
county option law waa regarded by
.the liquor Interests as an opening
wedge for complete "prohibition.
Republicans of the House present
practically a solid front against the
repeal of the law, and it is said that
not more than three or four of the
republican representatives will vote
to repeal the law. In fact, it is said,
the republicans are almost willing to
pledge that if the democrats can mus-
ter fourteen votes in the House the
county option law will remain Intact,
so far as that branch of the legisla-
ture is concerned.
The county option la# was parsed
at a special session of the legislature,
called by Governor Hanly shortly be-
fore the election, and at that time only
four republicans of the Houbc—
Schreeder, Oelss, Condo and Keller—
voted against the bill.. Of these four
only Schreeder Is a member of the
present House. It is taken for grant-
ed that Schreeder will vote for the
repeal of the law.
It 1b not believed that more than
three others will favor the repeal. Re-
publican friends of the law estimate
that théy TÉI11 have thirty-six votes
that will remain firm for the option
law. Therefore if they can get four-
teen democratic votes, county option
is safe unless it shall be molested by
the senate.

with a large eel and weighted with
twenty pounds, of lead. To permit
the fish to play on the line'the shore
end was fastened to a tree, which

had the most difficulty in landing the
smallest fish, which was about six,
feet in length and weighed 200 pounds.
It fought and slashed the water for
about an hour, before -It was brought
to the river bank. These are the
largest fish .caught on -the Snake rlyer

"A Savage-rKing" held the boards
at the Orange theater last night , and
it was in truth and reality
as savage an attraction as has ever]
been seen in that amusement place.
There was a very small attendance,
and the house was somewhat cold, and
it may have been possible that the
company would have given a more
creditable exhibition had they had
warmer place In which to carry out
their stunts. Eva Sargent as the
Countess might probably have been
good, had she a good voice that "was
a little more skillfully handled, and
it did not take her so .long to expire
after stabbing herself.
Russell Snoad, «a El Aguila, the
last of the Montézumas, did not. set
any hills on fire, nor anything else
that wás flashing, dashing, or crash-
ing, though he did manage to slip
in at the close of each act and tell
the audience that It would not happen
while" he lived.
As a whole, the attraction was about
the tamest offering that has been
witnessed".by thé writer the present
season.

Rosabel Morrison In "Faust"
"Miss Rosabel Morrison, who open
ed the first of a series of three per-
formances of "Faust" at the Jefferson
theatre Friday night, accomplished
what many thought was impossible,
she has recreated "Faust" without the
greatest star, her late father, Lewis
Morrison. What is more she is sur-
rounded by so well balanced and capaf
ble a company that only those who
were well used to the masterly man-
nerism of Morrison can draw compari-
son.
"Edward N. Hoyt as "Mephlsto" is
so capable an understudy of the elder
Morrison that to many they might
have thought he himself was looking
on with mocking eyes or voicing cynl
cal laughter. Miss Morrison Ib no-
tably better In the latter two acts
than she is at the Outset. Her work
to the dying Marguerite can not be
.commended-too highly.
The company as stated is an unus-
ually well balanced one. The cho-
ruses were excellent and were never
off key. The. usual superb séttlhgs-of
"Faust" are In evidence in the Brock-
en scene, where the stage master has
lavished all that is at the command
Of modern science and machinery in
producing a terrific and a terrifying
spectacle.
