What Journalists See.
Dr. T. DeWitt Talmage has a proper
conception of the newspaper profes-
sion, and of some of the thiugs its
members are compelled to deal with
daily. After summing it he wonders
that newspaper men believe anythiug.
A recent statement made by this
eminent divine is so true that we re-
produce it below for the benefit of our
readers. He says:
"One of the great trials of the news-
paper profession is that its members
are compelled to see more of the sham
of the worid than any other profes-
sion. Through every newspaper office,
day after day, go &11 the wickedness of
ll e world—all the vanities that want
to be p. T. d, all the revenges that
want to be reaped, all the mistakes
that want to be corrected, all the dull
speakers that want to be thought elo-
quent, all the meanness tha~ wants to
get its wares noticed gratis in the edi-
torial column in order to save the tax
of the advertising column, all the men
i who want to be set right, who were
: nev.-r right: all the crack-brained pliil-
i osc .«hers with stories as long as long as
| their hair and as gloomy as their finger
I nails in mourning because bereft of
soap, all the bores who come to stay
minutes but talk five hours.
Through the editorial and repertorial
! rooms all the follies and shame of the
world are í íen, day after day, and the
temptation is to believe in neither
God, man nor woman. It is no sur-
\ rise to me that in this profession
there are some skeptical men. I oniv
wonder that newspaper men believe
anything,"
