Sorority elects Nelda Laurel
as 1994 sweetheart
lexas Preceptor Iota Chi of Beta
Sigma I'hi elected Nelda Laurel as
their 1994 Sweetheart at their
second meeting in January, held in
the home of Josie Ciucrra.
Plans were made to recognize
Mrs. Laurel, a teacher at Rio
Grande City High School, at the
annual Sweetheart Dance set for
Saturday, February 12.
Rosie Garcia presented a
program on "Treasure the
Memories--Favorite Movies"
following the business meeting,
during which Tissa Peterson
presided.
The program chairman staled
thai it all began with a curious and
gaudy store called a nickelodeon in
1910 where the fast "movies" could
be seen for the price of a nickel In
the mid-1920's, movies were
threatened by a new rival, radio.
Mrs. Garcia stated that sound
wax added to silent movies in 1927
with "The Jazz Singer" starring AI

First Baptist schedules week
of revival services
Roma High offers
dropout aid program
First Baptist Church of Rio
Grande City will be holding a week
of special revival services
beginning Monday night, Jan. 31
and ending Sunday morning, Feb.
6.
The evangelist for the week of
services will be Dr. Gary
Singleton, pastor of Calvary
Baptist Church in McAllen.
The music evangelist will be
Donnie Page, Minister of Music
and Education at First Baptist
,'hurch in Whitehouse, Texas.
V/hitehouse is located near Tyler in
northeast Texas. Page has served as
the music evangelist for the First
Baptist revival services three of the
past six years.
The services will begin on
Monday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. Services
on Tuesday through Saturday
evenings will also start at 7 p.m.
The week of services will conclude
with the worship service on Sunday
morning, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
Roland Ouellette, pastor of First
Baptist Church, said, "We invite
and encourage everyone in the
community to attend these services
and to bring a friend."
Ouellette commented, "Both our
church and the entire community
need God's spirit to move. We feel
that God has led us to these two
men for this week of services, and
they feel the same way."
Ouellette emphasized, "My desire
is that God use us as an instrument
of revival in this community."
Bible studies will take place each
day at the church during the noon
hour from Tuesday, Feb. 1 through
Friday, Feb. 4. A light lunch,
including soup, salad and
sandwiches, will be served.
A nursery will be provided for the
Sunday morning service and for all
evening worship services.
Dr. Gary Singleton was born in
Jacksboro, Texas and grew up in
Mineral Wells. He graduated from
high school in Lake Worth, located
near Fort Worth. He graduated from
East Texas State University in
Commerce with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Agricultural
Education.
Dr. Singleton earned a Master of
Divinity Degree from Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary in
Fort Worth, and later was awarded a
Doctor of Ministry degree from
Southwestern Seminary.
For three years. Singleton was
pastor of First Baptist Church in
Cristoval, Texas, located near San
Angelo. From 1987 to 1991, he
served as Associate Pastor at First
Baptist Church of Columbus,
Georgia
Dr. Singleton has been pastor of
Calvary Baptist Church in McAllen
since March 1991. He presently
serves on the Executive Board of
the Baptist General Convention of
Texas, and is a member of the board
of trustees of Valley Baptist
Academy in Harlingen.
Donnie Page was born in Waco,
Texas. He has an Associate of Arts
degree from Jacksonville College in
Jacksonville, Texas, a Bachelor of
Arts degree from Lamar University
in Beaumont and a Master of Arts
degree from the University of
Texas. He taught music for two
years at Jacksonville College.
Page plays the piano, trumpet
and guitar, and is gifted in both
vocal and choral music.

Evening classes are being
conducted at Roma for students who
dropped out from Roma High
School during the past two years.
Classes in English, mathematics,
science and social studies are taught
Monday through Thursday from
2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This recovery
program is aimed at assisting
participants in earning credits for
graduation.
Students who dropped due to
illness, excessive absences, early
marriage or other related factors are
encouraged to enroll. Information
may be obtained by calling Mr.
Humberto Vasquez or Mr. Juan
Munoz at 849-1333 during the
hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Roma TAAS
deadline Feb. 15
The Roma ISD announces that
Feb. 15, 1994 is the registration
deadline for out-of-school persons
interested in taking the
TAAS/TEAMS Exit Level Test
required by the state for graduation.
This deadline applies to the
TAAS Writing Test Exit Level,
TAAS Reading Exit Exit Level and
TAAS Mathematics Exit Level, as
well as the TEAMS test.
The tests will be administered on
Tuesday, March 8 at Roma High
School.
Anyone seeking additional
information should contact Mr.
Juan A. Munoz, Counselor, at
849-1333.

the screen was crowded with line

Garland, and "Gone with the Wind."
She added that the first feature-
length animated picture was "Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs" in
1939. Movies in the 1940's
included documentaries about the
war, showing actual films from the
battlefield, and stories about
wartime spying.
"In the 1950's, television
became a real threat to the
popularity movies had enjoyed.
Several innovations were employed
to cncouragc the audience, including
3-D movies and Cinerama
projection," said Mrs. Garcia.
She added, "Many movies are
now made by directors, actors, and
technicians of many kinds from
different countries working together.
Although the national character of
movies may slowly be lost, the
international groups have the
advantage of choosing the nlace and
people that best suit their needs.
Also, movies can be made more
cheaply in some countries than in
others."
As members munched on
popcorn, "to set the movie mood,"
the program was concluded with a
discussion of their favorite films
through the years.
