County Judge proclaims
'Week of Young Child'
The period of April 18-22 has
been proclaimed as "Week of the
Young Child" in Starr County.
A large group of officials from
the Starr County government, the
Community Action Council of
South Texas, the Rio Grande City
CISD and the Starr County
Extension Service were on hand for
Monday morning's ceremony at the
County Courthouse launching
"Week of the Young Child."
Mrs. Estela Hernandez, Parental
Involvement Specialist,
commented, "We are working to
help the young child. We are trying
to increase parental involvement
with the young child in the
schools."
Also speaking to the audience
was Parental Involvement
Specialist Mrs. Carolyn Lopez.
RGCCISD Superintendent Ruben
Saenz declared, "This is a very
special occasion." Saenz recognized
his former schoolteacher, Mrs.
Adela Guerrero, and praised her Dy
saying, "I never forgot what she
taught me in terms of values."
Saenz emphasized, "We do
believe in the young child. If this
country is to have a future, you (the
young children) are our future. We
need our young people to grow up
wi'Ji good, sound values. Keep your
sights high, work hard, love your
parents and respect your neighbor.
We believe that all of you are
capable of accomplishing
tremendous things. One of you
could be the President of the United
States and one of you might be the
Governor of Texas."
Starr County Extension Agent
Home Economist Yolanda Morado
presented a special trophy to Mrs.
Adela Guerrero concerning the
recent Parents Conference held
under the auspices of the
RGCCISD, Community Action
Council and Texas Agricultural
Extension Scrvice. The trophy was
a commendation to the Headstart
programs in the county.

Thursday evening, April 14, at the Multipurpose Center. Longino Villarreal is

Finalists, Rosa Vela, commented, "I

that develops problem-solving
skills and rewards critical thinking.
The spontaneous problem gives
children the requirement to think on
their feet and function as a team
underpressure."
