Why Ho Foil.
Tho Dallas correspondent of the
Now Orleans Timee-Dcmocrat writes
llwt paper as follows:
Tlio conviction of Stillwcll II.
Ruescll, ex-United States marshal of
Western Texas, and his condemna-
tion to the penitentiary, produced
more than an ordinary sensation in
Texas, not to say surprise. Ever
since the war tho different presidents
have been in tho habit of picking up
bummers and scruff of bad reputa-
tions at home, commissioning and
billeting tjjem upon tho people of
Texus. Ninoty-nino rascals have
escaped, and Kussell is convicted.
Russell owes his downfall to wirie
and women. It's tho old, old story.
A variety actress, nightly appears
beforo the footlights of Dallas and
p.n audience, often in the clutches
oi the police and "grand juries,
who openly boasts of wearing
$10,000 worth of diamonds
given her by ex-Marshal Jfussell
while she was his mistress, and.
bought with money he had stolen
from the government. Who is not
the least approach to beautiful but
is us sharp as a steel trap, cunning
as a fox. soft as a mole, and as un-
scrupulous as tho devil. And it is ft
noted and notorious fact, about tbo
town of Marshall, where ho lived,
that bo in private transactions was
n rascal, lie built a fine mansion
over there, swindlt d tho contractors,
at St. Lc^iis furniture dealors
out oIcTTutlgH mahogany, black w:*l-
Mit, and cherry^ Brussels and laces
to furnish it from top to bottom. Ho
was proven guilty at his trial, point
blank. And jet there has been
started a petition at many points in
Texas asking tho president to par-
don him. Borne Republicans and
Democrats aro signing it upon tho
ground that Federal officeholders in
Tuxas are no better than he is, and
Ihe government should not make
fish of oiie and flesh of othors. Others
aro signing, as they sign everything
ebc of that kind, because thoy are
asked to.
I understand the President nevor
pays the slight-si attontion to such
documents. He refuses to pardon
even sergeant Mason in deference to
public sentiment, and therefore tho
chances for Russell's escapo are just
none, at all if he counts upon getting
out that door. Russell was agteat
and imperious swell up to the tirno
ho was arrested. Ho had a lordly
air, a contempt for ordinary folks,
stole money like a bank forger and
spent it liko a Lord Gordon. His
feathers aro down now, his char-
acter gone, his pocket empty, and in
v a few days his $10 tweed cloth will
he laid aside for 10 cent stripes.
Unless you bavo a chance to shuffle
the deck under tho table and fix the
aces so thoy will face tho dealer,
honesty is tho beet policy.

Immense Estate in Mexico.
Much has boon said and written of
tho great extent and largo possibili-
ties of Mexican haciendas. But pro-
bably fow people in tho United States
even yet realize tho extent of gome
of theso tracts of land, whero a mil-
lion or a million and a half of acres
' often constitute a single estate in the
hands of ono owner. There aro
many such estates in Mexico, large
enough to hido away manyaEuropean
principality, large enough to awaken
the envy of many a land proprietor
m the Pacific coast states of the
Union. Theso are to bo found in
many of the central and horthern
states of Mcxico. The famous Salado
ranche, for example, contains over
600 square miles of land. It lies
partly in the states of Nuovo Leon,
Coabulia, Zacatecas, and San Louis
Potosi, on tho highway to Mexico,
and oil the lino of the now railroads.
It ocoupies the Central table lands of
Mexico at afr .pverago elevation of
4,000 feet. Chains of mountains tra-
verse the estate, rich in mineral
wealth. The ooondarieB of the es-
tate extend morelhan 1Q0 miles from
nroth to south, and flourishing farms
and largo mining towns are met at
- frequent intervals.—-San Francisco
Alto.

Plies are frequently preceded by a
sense of weight in the biwk, loins and
lower part of the abdomen, causing the
patient to think be luis some affection of
the kidneys or neighboring organs. At
times symptoms of indigestion are pres-
ent, as flatulency, uneasiness of the
stomach, etc. A moisture, like perspi-
ration., producing a verv disagreeable
itching, particularly at night after get-
ting warm In bed. is a very common at-
tendant. Blind, Bleeding and Itching
Piles yield at once to the application of
Dr. Bosanko's l'lle Hetuedy, which actB
directly upon the parts affected, absorb-
ing the Tumors, allaying the Intense
itching, and effecting a permanent, cure,
where all other remedies have failed.
l)o not delay until the drain on the sys-
tem produces permanent disability, but
try' it and lie cured. Price, 50 cents.
