your negotiations
with the late republic. Whatever opin
ions nniy he entertained by the people of
Texa8 witli resdect to the different grades
of merit attached to the various claims
against her as the representative of the
tp republic, in regard to yours, when ful-
understood, there will, I am satisfied,
be very little'diversity.
When my country was poor, and in ac-
tual need of help, you, a stranger, and
owing her nothing,, and moved mainly by
generous impulses for a people struggling
for their independence, came to her in
her weakness and gave her what she ask-
ed, and as she-asked it—risking thereby
not only your money advanced, but the
stability of your commercial position.—
I lament/itherefore, that the risk you so
genorously inciUTed should, np to the
preset period,' have resulted so unfortun-
ately for yon. My country will yet grate-
fully remember this and do you the jus-
tice you deserve, which has been so long
withheld. This is not simply the expres-
sion of my own sentiments, but my judg-
ment, based on a knowledge of the peo-
of my State, who, to do what is right,
need only be rightly informed. But, you
^are aware that, with a territory so vast
.in intercommunication must be
slow.ana Tffltreqnc..., x......
wod when you rendered Tex«s such signal
aid, her population has been swelled by
numbers of immigrants who, knowing lit-
~ «lft of the early history of the country,
•r&jwt prepared to appreciate at once
the motives and services of men who in
early times ventured all for her political
ulvation. Even old Texans, I find, of
excellent general intelligence, yet posses-
sing in reference to your claim, and those
of other persons very little general infor-
mation. It cannot, therefore, be a mat-
ter of surprise that many should come to
our legislature without that knowledge of
facts necessary to direct them to sound
xconclusions in adjusting every class of li-
ability. This is evidenced as well by the
changes of opinion manifested by so many
of- the members during the late session,
(some of whom I have understood, con-
ceived themselves pledged against your
claim before they met in assembly, its na-
ture not having been previously under-
stood,) as also by the very strong vote it
received—and this, too, I was gratified to
learn, without any importunity on your
part.
Allow me to assure you I have derived
satisfaction from having myself ob-
served (and such is the testimony of oth-
«rs) the gentlemanly and nnobtrusive
maimer in which you have presented your
CWM for the calm consideration and
judgment ef the people and their legis-
lature. You have, indeed, strictly ad-
hered to your promise in your memorial,
and have not nrged your claim with any
unseemly earnestness. Of your willing-
ness" tet invest a large portion of your
bond in such internal- improvements as
the Stift© should authorize, it is unnec-

THE SATURDAY EVENING
Unrivaled Array of Talent
THE proprietors of the Post, in again ooHta|
before the public, would return thanks for Ilia
generous patronage which has placed them tola
advance of every other literary weekly in America.
And, as the only suitable return for such ir^ ud
hearty support, their arrangements for 1854 have
been made with a degree of liberality jrobably fen-
equaled in the history of American newspaper lite-
rature. They have engaged as contributors-for Jji*
ensuing year the following brilliant array of tafent
and genius: —Mrs. SOCTHWORTH. EMSlSON
BENNETT, Mrs. DENKON, GRACE GREENWOOD
and FANNY FERN. In the first paper of Jannaty
next, we design commencing an original novelet,
written expressly for our column?, entitled "Ta«
Bride of the Whoerxess," ly Emerson
author of "Viola," "Clara vorciand," "The Forged
Will," etc. This novelet, by the popular author.of
"Clara Moreland," we design following by another
called "Ths Step-Mother," by Mrs. Mary A. Derii-
son, author of " Home Pictures," " Gertrude Rns-
sell," etc. We have also the promise of a number
of Sketches by Grace Greenwood, whose brilfiMtand
versatile pen will be almost exclusively employed
upon the Post and her own "Little Pilgrim." Mrs.
South worth—whose fascinating works are notch-
ing rapidly republished in England—also will main-
tain her old and pleasant connection with the Pott.
The next story from her gifted pen will be entit^M,
"Miriam, the Avenger; or, the Fatal Vow" by
Emma D. E. N. Southworth, author of "The Curse
of Clifton," " The Lost Heiress," " The Deserted
Wife," etc. And last—not least—we are author-
ized to announce a series of articles from one who
has rapidly risen very high in popularCavor-;' They
will be entitled a Xeie Series of Sketches, by Fasaty
Fern, author of "Fern Leaves," etc. We expect to
be able to commence the Sketches by Fanny Pern
] —as well as the series by Grace GreenwQq&**n
. the early numbers of the coming year. Engryv-
