Howe's Cotton Harvester.
THIS .Machine now awaits atrial .>y the cotton
growing interest of the South, having been pa-
tentedIon the 5ih of December, 1855. Its principle
of action is that of an endless chain with open links,
so formed as to afford a double row of card teeth
which, put in motion by a simple mechanical com-
bination nropelled by the hand, pulls the lint from
the bowl through a tube, and deposits it in a sack
attached to the lower part of the machine—the whole
being suspended by a strap on the shoulder as the
cotton sack usually is, and of inconsiderable weight.
It is believed by competent judges that it will prove
to be a labor-saving machine of decided value, as
well as to improve greatly the value of the cotton by
separating the lint from trash. The Agent of the
Patentee in New Orleans has guarantied that 100i
pounds of cotton per day by a single hand may bo
gathered, and, in point of durability, that the ma-
chine is twenty-five dollars, payable on delivery
in Galveston or Houston during the ensuing summtr
and; utuma.

Fredulent imitations of superior Commodalion.
Among the many dishonesties of irade whioh the
moral sense of the community is called upon to
suppress: we would particularly notice a most per-
nicious practice adopted by unscrupulous dealers
of imitating and counterfeiting the exterior appear
ance and precautionary labels >f popular drn< s
medicaments, aud other article of personal con-
sumption, and thus, *y seising upon the well re-
quired reputation of an e terprising trader, palm-
ing ofl' most destructive and worthless compounds,
to the sore detinient not onlj* of the consumer, but
to the character of the man who has expended thou
s snds of dollars in bringing the genuine article in-
to esteem and demand. These petty larceny thieves
are the pest of all honorable dealers and traders,
and the trade is as much highway robbery as the
violent appropriation of their neighbor's purse; in
act they are beneath the burglar and highwayman
in dignity—for these latter felons exhibit a brzvery
or recklessness of character in nowise distinguish-
ing the mercantile assassiu who stabs in the dark.
And ought they not be rewarded with a punishment
commensurate with the cowardice of their crimes ?
fectly, with the slight addition of a few letters to
plead technical avoidance of the law against coun-
terfeiting; the bottles were very similar, and every
thing carefully prepared to impose upon a careless
purchaser. Now is uot the man who perpetrated
this fraud, a felon, a robber ? Assuredly he is; for
as Mr Wolfe had expended large sums to bring his
genuine imported schnapps into popular demand,
that demand may be justly considered a part of his
capita! in trade, and a fellow steal;nga part of his
reputation is as much of a thief as if he had stolen
r. barrel of his schnapps in bulk. Ami to this crimc
he adds a further one of defrauding the communiiy
by giving them a ruinous articles for the money
they intended to expend for a commodity in which
they had confidence- And further, every man who '
participates indirectly in the fraud, by scllingspur
ious articles is much of an offender as the princi-
pal who plained the imposition. The remedy of Mr
Wolfe should lie in his holding all concerned up to
the contempt of the community thus swindled by
their operations, and unconsiously imposed upon
by their noxious composition. We trust that Mr
Wolfe wil! obtain names, not only of the concoc-
tor3 of these counterfeits, but of every man ofTerin"
them for sale, and then publish them to che world*
for his own reputation and the health of the com-
munity demand that all parties should be nailed to
he pi lory of execration.
(From the New York Dispatch.|
AN ISFAMOt'S BCSI.VK??.
When an enterprising men srrikes out a new busi-
ness, to the business, to the establishment of which
he gives his industry, time talents and pecuniary
means, can anything be more contempt, ble than to
have another steal in, and under precious pretexts,
hold out to the public an inferior article, and en-
deavor to obtain their patronage V Pray, what dif-
ference is there, so far as the honesty of the thing
is con rerned, between v-urioining the business by
which a citizen hopes to make his bread and steal-
ing the bread itself? A common thief, if he takes
without leave, however hucgry. a loaf of bread from
a baker's shop, is apprehended and condemned to
the penitentiary for daring in a surreptious manner
to a pease his appeitet but put a respectable looking
coat on his back and a few dollars in his pocket-and
he may, with impunity, nay, even with the applause
of his fellows, by knavery, forgery or other infa
mous means, take the business of an honest man
from him. and go unscathed of justice. Ali this is
wrong. Some yeats since a ^gentleman of this city
(Udolphe Wolfe introduced to the citizens of the
United States a medicaied article of gin, which was
highly approved by professional gentlemen as a su-
perior tonic and deobstruent, and the knowledge of
which he. by advertisement and otherwise, dissem-
inated throughout the country. So soon as trick-
sters, wha pass in the business community as hon
est men, saw that Mr. Woife was likely to have hand
some returns for the time and money which he had
expended, they set about forging his la* els and
palming off upon the people detestable and poison-
ous compounds which they have the hardihood to
call it Schiedam Schnapps " In some instances
they have gone so far as to put Wolfe's name to their
villanous liquids. As this horde are grow'ng bold
in their rascalities, it is time the public in town
and country put on their gurd. Consumers should
besuicthat they purchase the genuine article or
else their health may be irreparably injured by using
the horrible stuff tnat unscrupulous men, . .'cause
they can buy it cheap, will offer as the {genuine ar-
ticle. Pure Schiedam Schnapps can only obtain-
ed at the ssores of respectable merchants and drug-
gists, in town and country; and at the v-l-blish-
men.t of Udolphe Wolfe, Nos, 1c', £li and 22 Ueaver
Street, in this city, where it is gotton uperr^lusive-
ly. We think it a duty which Mr v\ olfe owes to
himself and the community to publish, by name,
the rascals who are thus attempting to defraud both
him and those who wouid be his customers. Ik-
should not permit his modesty to hold him luck from
making so righteous an expose.

singer's Hewing: Machine*
T£IE3E celebrated machines *re practica
and profitable use in all parts of the civilised'
world. In all the various trades, and in sewing
every sort of fabric, either of cloth or leather, they
have been fully tried and approved. Sewing ma-
nufactures often fail to work, but
Singer*s Maoiuxe's always operate Perfectly,
being strong, durable and complete in contrivance
and workmanship. A perfect sewin ? machine kept
employed affords a clear profit of 1,000 dollars a
.year; nut an imperfect one is a cause of cdhstant
vexation and loss. The entire reliability of our
machines is one great reason for their unparalleled
popularity.
MACHINES FOR FAMILY SEWING,
of a fraii and delicate construction, are recom-
mended by other manufacturers. Such machine, are
made to'catch 'the eye, not to perform substantial
work. The truth is, family sewing machines ought
to be stronger than any other, because they go into
less skillful hands than when sold to manu&cturies,
and are used for a greater variety of work. The
machines which have proved beat for all other pur-
poses must be best for family use, and they are Sin-
gers. The speed of our machines has lately been
doubled. No other can eompare with them in quan-
tity of work $-■ ;s. i
New machines of the latest improved style
will be exchanged on liberal terms for old sewing
machines of our own make, or for operative ma-
chines of other manufacturers. Local agents want-
ed to sell our machines.
N. 15.—All persons desiring fall information
about sewing machines can obtain it by applying
for a copy of "I M Singer & Co's Gazette," a paper
devoted entirely to the subject. It will be sent

Thegr at and important event—Religious, Pol
tical. and Military—n >w agitating the natiou^of th
Old World, give to these Publications an interes
and value they never before possessed. They oc-
cupy a middle ground between the hastily* written
news-items, crude speculations, and flying rumors
of the newspaper, and the ponderous tone of the
historian, written long after the living interest in
the facts he records shall have passed away. The
progress of the war in the east occupies a large
space in their pages. Kverj- movement is closely
criticised, whether of friend or of foe, and all short-
comings fearlessly pointed out. The letters from
the Crimea and from the Baltic in Black wood's Ma-
gazine, from two of its most popular contribu
tors, give a more intelligible and reliable account
of the movements of the great belligerents than can
elsewhere be found.
These Periodicals ably represent the three great
political parties of Great Britain—Whig, Tory, and
Radical,—but politics forms only one feature of their
character. As orgsns of the most profound writers
ou Science, Literature, Morality, and Religion, they
stand as they ever have stood, unrivaled in the
wor d of ictters. being considered indispensable to
the scholar and the professional man, while to the
intelligent reader of every class they furnish a more
correct and satisfactory record of the current lite-
rature of the day, throughout the world, than can
be possibly obtained from any other.
