The Democrat says:
. A gentleman who hd&juet returned
from Anderson county informs us
thiufc tike prospects of the planters in
that eounty were never better. The
freedmen liave nearly all found good
homes, and are working much better
than was anticipated. With* fair"
seasons, and a continuance of'tlie
good conduct of the laborers, a heavy
drop of cotton aud corn will be the
result.
We regret to learn from the Tyler
Reporter that it is not supported as it
ought to be there. We advise oar
cotemporary to move dtfwn here.-
There is room for three in Houston,
The Reporter says: ilfegmAm: ■
We understand the farmers are
busy at work preparing their lands
for early plant! ng. We beiiav* if the
seasons are favorable, Smith county
will produce a fair crop this jjear.
The wheat, as far as we have seen,
is looking well.
We are glad <to notice that the
mails have been re-established to
Tyler.
From the presentment of the Grand
J dry of Smith county, we make the
following extracts:
Crime, with that class of inhabi-
tants which has so receotly been with-
drawn from the protecting and provi-
ding care of* humane masters, and
thrown, all unprepared for the
struggle, upon their own resources, is
not as prevalent as it was feared it
would be. Whilst it is true that some
of the freedmen have inaugurated
their freedom by viciousaud unlawful
indulgences, the great mass ot them
have gone to work under contracts
with irhite men, with a cheerful seal
which promises much good in the fu-
ture. We believe that by evoking to
our aid wise legislation, and by the
exercise of patient forbearance toward
the negro, he may be made to con-
tribute much to the wealth and pros-
perity of our country; at least, the
importance of i the experiment de-
mands at our liands a fair trial.
We take the following items from
the Jefferson JimpKcute:
We are informed by Capt. N. A.
Birge and others who .have been
traveling through the north-western
counties, that there is being -large
breadth of grain sown. Everywhere
and Represen-

at $100 per bale, makes>in the aggre-

All of which savors just a little+of

hatched. However the Journal con-
cludes correctly by saying: "This
county can as easily sustaita a farming
population of thirty thousand, as she
does now twelve thousand, and nn
