Clasp Committee
Urges Exes Support
With the largest enrollment in
history—1,541 students—McMurry
enters into the College Loyalty
Alumni Student Program this
year.
"This unexpected mid-term
growth serves to point up the im-
portance of CLASP," said Dr.
Gordon Bennett. "It means that
more and more people are looking
to ex-students of their college for
continued loyalty and support."
In charge of the Abilene loy-
alty drive for McMurry is Gar-
net Gracy, vice president of the
First National Bank in Abilene.
He is assisted by J. B. Jordan Jr.,
right-of-way agent for West
Texas Utilities Company.
The CLASP program is com-
mended primarily because it re-
minds the supporters of McMurry
that the small gifts are import-
ant. Only through an organized
program like CLASP can the
solicitation of small gifts be eco-
nomically feasible.
McMurry's building program,
which will be aided by the
CLASP campaign, includes a new
library, a science center to house
one of the strongest undergrad-
uate science departments in the
state, a fine arts center and a
field house.
Library
Building
Proposed
Plans are underway for the con-
struction of a new library build-
ing, costing an estimated $400,000.
Previous plans were to convert
the present administration into a
library. Planners decided to pro-
pose the construction of a new
library rather than attempt to re-
touch the administration building
when it became apparent that the
renovation would cost approxi-
mately as much as a new build-
ing.
Dr. Gordon Bennett, McMurry
president, recommended a 100,000
volume library to be built at an
estimated cost of $400,000 to the
Building and Grounds Commit-
tee of the college board of
trustees at a recent session.
The president proposed that
plans be drawn up for a two-story
structure to be submitted to the
full board.
The committee voted to recom-
jnend a summer date for ground-
breaking to the board after hear-
ing Dr. Bennett list the new
library to the top of a newly-
revised priority list for campus
building construction.
Dr. Bennett advised the build-
ing committee that he wanted the
library built first in the revised
master plan of construction, ex-
plaining that it would permit con-
version of the present administra-
tion building to a combination
office-classroom space at a modest
cost.
The Building and Grounds
Committee also considered Dr.
Bennett's plans for construction
for the new Science Center and
Fine Arts Center. Bennett ex-
pressed confidence that the con-
tract for the Science Center will
be let by January.
