STUDY THE BIBLE
THE LAW OF MOSES
The period of, time following
the exodus of Israel from Egypt
is usually referred to as-- the
"wilderness wondertngs". This
was a-time in which fhe child-
ren of Israel - wondered- in the
wilderness for forty years Be-
cause of the unbelief of most of
the people. During the time that
the Israelites were in the wilder-
ness God gave them a law to be
governed by. This law is spoken
of as "The Law of Moses", how-
ever it was God's law, but __was
administered unto the people by
Moses: It Is of the utmost im-
portanee that-we-study the pur -
pose of this law, and to whom it
applied.
/The promise God made to A-
braham concerning the land
that flowed with milk and hon-
ey, and a great nation, had not
yet been fulfilled. We learned
in our study last week that there
were four things that are requir-
ed to form a kingdom: a king,
subjects, law, and territory. Is-
rael had the subjects, Moses was
the leader, but they didn't have
a law, nor" a 'country. >Ve want
to remind you that Israel had
been-separated from the rest of
the world, and God was direct-
ing the action for a special pur-
pose, thus when God called
Mosafei Up into Mt. Sinai to give
him the law, it was for the Is-
raelite nation and none other.
This is a common mistake a-
mong people today in the study
of the Bible, Many people con-
sider the law that God gave to
Moses and Israel as being in ef-
fect today, but this law was nev-
er bound upon any nation other
than Israel. Paul says in Gala-
fions 3:24, /'Wherefore the law
was our schoolmaster to bring
u? to Christ, that we might be
justified by faith." Then in Ci-
tations 5:4t "Christ is become of
no effect unto you, "whosoever of
you are justified by the law; ye
are fallen from 'grace." So, it is
not so difficult to understand
that we, as Gentiles, are not
bound by any part of the Law
of Moses. We are under the law
of Christ found.in, the.New Test-
ament. "The Ten Command-
ments" contained in the "Law of
Moses" are not-binding oh us to-
day. We have a far greater law
in th£: New -Testament to which
we must submit. Jesus . said; "If
ye love me, keep my command-
ments." (Jnq. 14:15). The Law of
Moses said, "Thou shalt not..
Jesus says, If you love me you
will not.
When the Israelites concluded
their wondering in the wilder-
ness and crossed the Jordan Riv-
er into Canaan,lihey-still Jacked
the land promise that God made
to Abraham. They began to con-
quer the land of Canaan, and
under the leadership of David
finally overcome the enemy, and
the land wa§' theirs. This was
the final part of the kingdom of
Israel. They now had land, king,
law and subjects. This fulfilled
the promise of God in this Re-
spect, but there was a greater
promise that Was to be fulfilled
in later years, and that promise
was Christ. ^ ;
