been raised or pledged.
As chairman of the Fund's statewide advisory committee, I
ask you to take a few moments to learn more about the Fund, and
then to join me and lawyers around the State, together with others
interested in a representative Bar that meets the highest standards,
in bringing the New Century Fund all the way home.
The Fund was conceived in 197 4 by a group of students of the
lav; school classes of 1974 and 75, including an editor-in-chief
of the Law Review, a chairman of the Board of Advocates, two
presidents of the Student Bar Association, a head Teaching Quiz-
master, and winners of several outstanding lav; student awards.
(One of these students is now law clerk to Supreme Court Justice
Blackrnun; others are practicing law here in Texas, including for
the Attorney General's Office.)
These students carefully researched the problem, including
the number of potential students that the state was losing, the
reason that they were being lost to out-of-state schools, and the
way that offers of the proposed scholarships should be meshed with
the University's existing admissions process. They prepared an
extensive report, and persuaded the dean of the law school that
their project deserved support.
Next, these students came to me and asked my help in forming
an advisory committee, principally to take charge of the fundraising
activities. We put together a first rate group of lawyers from all
