Dr. John E. Gray, widely-renowned educator and community leader, was
named president of Lamar University by the Board of Regents on May 30,
1972.
Dr. Gray, in response to the regent's invitation to accept the presidency,
noted that his tenure as Lamar's leader "cannot be of extended
duration." He added, however, that he hoped to "have the good fortune
to remain long enough to make a lasting contribution. Otherwise, there
would be no real purpose in my acceptance of this responsibility."Gray, who first became president of Lamar
