be created Cardinals.
The Frenck government has lately
granted a pension of f 050 a year to the
widow of the French Consul Moulin
who was killed in a Turkish riot at
Balonica last May. Iu addition to
this the Turkish government has paid
the lady and her children $100000.
Mile. Albani the youDg American
prima donna has made a success in
Paris which almost eclipses Patti's tri
umphs and will make the jealous Slur
quise the niot miserable of women
She grieves horribly overs success won
by anybody but herself. Mile. Albani
baa worked very hard and thoroughly
deserves her good fortune.
Neuilly and the neighboring parti
of Paris have during the last month
or two been puzzled by aerial music
which war at last found to proceed
from carrier pigeons being reared and
trained at the Military Pigeon House
in the "Jardin d' Acclimation." As
they will in future be expected to tly
very long distances bcome exhausted
and then probably be attacked by
other birds extremely thin and light
bells have been attached to their
necks which it is believed will scare
assailants.
A new sod wonderful tenor it is
said has just been discovered by a
wall-known professor of music in Paris
in the Dcrson of a stone-carver em
ployed by an eminent French sculptor.
His voice is said to be a true and pow
erful tenor of extraordinary range and
quality and his fortunate discoverer
intends to introduce him shortly to M.
Ilalanzicr. He will form a pendant to
Manowry the sweet-voiced baritone
who was originally a journeyman dyer
snd was beard singing over his vats by
s professor of the Conservatoire.
Mr. Benjamin the eminent Q. C
who was once a United States Senator
sad who during the existence of the
Southern Confederacy was its Secre-
tary of State hai set an excellent ex-
ample to his colleagues at the English
bar. He returned all his briefs for the
ittinga of the courts at Guildhall ac-
companied by checks for the fees
which he had received on them.
Ilia reason was that as bis time would
be occupied in Westminster Hall he
did not consider it right to receive fees
for business to which he could not at-
tend. Dr. Kennedy recently wrote to the
Erl of Derby calling his attention to
the alleged new evidence in the Tich-
borne case and asking whether in the
event of bis going to Spain to inquire
into the matter bis lordship would
give him auy facilities for the eluci-
dation of the truth." His lordship
responded ambiguously. Meanwhile
Mr. Cubbctt has made another effort to
obtain the claimant's release. The
Court of Appeals however amid much
laughter refused to entertain the ap-
plication. Mr. Cobbett claims that
"Sir Roger" was illegally convicted
under an act which had been repealed
five years previous to his trial and
that even if the conviction was good.
his sentence could not legally exceed
even years instead of fourteen years
Tho London Truth sftjs of the author
of "Lucille": "Lord Lyltou lms

with less talent than he possesses would
have made a bct.cr governor general

of Lord ueaconstield throw the ultimo
of his appointment upon Lord Salis

The latter is really alone responsible
for it. Ho was an intimate friend of
Lord Lytton'a father and he had often

return of Lord Lytton to Europe may

A leading citir.cn and distinguished
lawyer of Texas residing in the Bra
sos country near the line of the Inter
national Railroad writes in the follow
log style to the Statesman :
I baveread with much pleasure you
articles favoring and urging the build
ins of narrow izauue railroads from
Austin to Lampasas and through Bur
net county. You have struck upon the
true course to promote the prosperity
snd ertatneesof ourcnpital city. .Nar

will answer tho purpose much better
than the average uaugo roads because
they can bo bunt lor so much less
money. Three miles of narrow gaugs

mount of money that is r quired t
build two miles of four feet eight and
S half-inch road; and no one will
doubt but that two roads leading
out ia different directions will be
mors advantageous to tho trade
of Austiu than only one road
Tbey will better subserve then the
wants of your city snd meet the cou-
veuience of the country than the ordi-
nary gauge roads. They will furnish
s convenience to more communities
because more of them can be built. The
great demand for chetp freights too
will be more readily met. The less the
coat of construction tbe cheaper will
be the rate of freight while tbe profits
of transportation will be the same. Let
Austin construct roads into Burnet and
Lampasas counties and with the Cen-
tral snd International to compete for
freights it will have the advantage over
sty city in tbe State snd its growth
sad prosperity will be uurivaled.
I am glad to see the learning and

to tbe development of the material re-

Ducklings Mokk 1'kopitaiile than
Chilkkns. The saying often applied
to young ducks that ' they eat more
than they are worih" may Lc n very
unjust one. Several years ago we
were speaking with a woman who
raised yearly large numbers of ducks
and chickens regarding the compara
tive amount of food consumed to bring
tnem to their full growth. She stated
that "ducks cat less in proportion to
their growth than chickens." Our
readers may be surprised at this but
upon giving the matter a little thought
they will understand the reason. Jt is
because the ducklings reach maturity
sooner than the chickens and of
course the longer it takes to briug a
creature to maturity the greater the
expense not only ol food but of time
and trouble. Experiment has demon-
strated the fact that with the same
quantity of food and cure the duck-
lings iu ninety days from the shell
may be made to weigh nine or ten
pounds per pair or over while chick-
ens in the same length of time come
Yo weigh only six or seven pounds per
pair. Hence the remaik quoted at the
commencement of this paper does not
apply when ducklings are properly and
intelligently managed. Poultry orll.
The Ahsoiiitivb Poweh of Soil.
) It is an important discovery of recent
date that soils have the power of sepa-
rating not only ammonia but other
bases also from their solution? and of
holding them with great tenacity after
their absorption. Thus one hundred
grains of clay soil taken from the plas
tic cl iv formation of Logland absorbed
1050 grains of potash from n solution
of caustic pot null containing one per
cent of the alkali. It is interesting to
observe that the liquid was not in this
case filtered through the soil out the
cold solution was merely lei tin contact
with it for twelve hours.
It has been further shown that soils
have the ability to separate the alka-
line bases from the Acids with which
they are combined. When saline solu-
tions were slowly filtered through soils
live or six inches deep the liquids
which pasted through were deprived
of their alkaline bases us potash sod"
ammonia an J magncsin and ouly the
acids wcro to be found in combination
with some other base. Thus when
muriate of ammonia was 'filtered
through the soil the ammonia was re
moved and a corresponding quantity of
lime in combination with muriatic
a'jid was foiud in the fi'ttred liquid.
In the same way sulphate of potash
was deprived of its bas - and the liquid
collected gave sulphate of lime.
liioso soils which have the greatest
umoiiut of capillary porosity will cou-
densu tho greatest amount of manurial
substances on their luternal surfaces
will retain them longest against the ad
verse solvent action of water and will
give them out most rca lily to the root
lets of the growing plant.
A mass ol adhesive clay will absorb
but a verv slight amount of available
manure; but it this s-nne mass is
rendered friable by meohauical pro
cesses its power or uosorption is amnz-
ini'ly increased. In view of what has
been stated it is very clear tint one
way iu which plowing increases the
fertility of hud is by increasing its
porosity by pulverization.
Again many manurial substances
exist in the soil which being insolu
ble excicise no action on the growth
of plants; but by the slow though
recular action of the frosts and the
rain tho air and the sunshine insolu
ole and refractory compounds are re
duced to a soluble state and are appro
priated and held ou dcpi-sit by the
soil to the credit of the next cultivated
crop. This expliins the well-known
fact that soils which have been cropped
to tho very verge of barrenness will
recover their fertility if allowe I to re-
main ling enough under the action of
climatic influences to saturate the toil
with the necessarv plant-food which
