The action of the Western Union tele-
graph company in cutting wires and
otherwise interfering with the business of
its young rival the Bunker' and Mer-
chants' telegraph company which caused
such a rush of indignant protest through-
out the United States some time ago and
which resulted in a two million dollar
suit being docketed against this giant
monopoly is again drought prominently
before the people by the trial of the
cause lu those who are unacquainted
with the tyrannical operations of the
Western Union which like n huge ana-
conda every now and then swallows some
young member of its branch and
then remains quiet to di-
gest its victim the recital
of their unjust and illegal nctx would seem
to be gross exaggeration. No one would
Kivc un-uence to an account or what oc-
curred last year in a large northern ctity
unless they were eye-witnesses of the act.
The Western Union cut the wires in three
distinct places of the Hankers' and Mer
chants lines and then placed at the foot
of the pole a powerful st-ong man said to
be armed with a revolver with orders to
prevent anyone from attempting to repair
the damage they had done. It is a sad
commentary upon the just interpretation
of the laws of this country which allows a
corporation whose plethoric purse can
quiet opposition and silence justice.to tako
the execution of ii pretended rights
into its own hands by force of anus. No
one can blame the officers of the corpo-
ration which can possess itself of such n
freedom from the restrictions of our
ft!ntuts. What is to be blamed is the law
which allows such a thing. Law which
will permit the acquisition of such pow-
ers is not law at all in the sense (hat Jlaw

oi immunity trom tlit) just operation of
laws regulating the conduct of ordinary
individuals toward ech other. The wrong
is not in the corporation for anyone who
had such n power would use it but in the
law which fosters corporations and trains
them into monopolies.

K.UI.ItO.U) CONNECTIONS.
That energetic little daily the Brown
wood Bee says! "On to Austin by way of
Burnet'' and holds out an appealing hand
to the business men of Austin. The coun
try in the neighborhood of Brownwood
is in a direct line north from Burnet
through Lampasas to Brownwood. and
thence to Coleman and Runnels thence to
the Texas Pacific railroad as a more di
rect connection with Galveston or Aransas
Pass insteiid of going around by Waco or
Fort Worth; and if the inducement is
sufficient the road would be pushed on in
to and tap the Panhandle thus giving
nearly bee line either to Galveston or Ar
ansas Pass. It has btcn said that a rail
roau through that country will not be self-
supporting unless it has some through
connection and here is such a connection
right to hand with the Texas Pacific
Let Austin wake up and ciase sleeping on
her arms. Here is all the rich country
west and north of her which can by a.
little business ei tjrprise bring their pro-
duce here and use this as their base of
supplies. On to Mason! On to Brown-

The organization of Knights of Labor
starting out on a set of principles which
commanded respect has slipped from the
grasp of the men who laid its foundations
and fallen under the domination of its.nn-
worthiest element. The revolutionary
wing planned and executed the violence
which clogged the wheels of commerce
and paralyzed the industry of half a con-
tinent for weeks of painful suspense. It
hud come to this: Mr. Powderly must
either resign his position and disavow its
lawless acts or fall into ranks with the
majority which would have none of the
wise recommendations of his ci rell I n v
He seems to have chosen the latter. Thi
alternative is dimly foreshadowed in the
u'rctilar itself.
Mr. (iiiuld and the monopolies he repre
sents lind iu these things matter for self-
felicitation. He has measured nrms uith
the Knights of Labor and has found that
the Ltlle linger of Jay Gould is thicker
than the loins of the organization. The
very wisest thing the knights can now do
