Between 1934 and 1943, 45 artists were com-
missioned to paint murals for the lobbies of 61
Texas post offices. Under the theme of "The
American Scene," the artists portrayed the
history of Texas by recreating historical events
and quiet pastoral scenes. Today, murals can
still be found in 50 locations throughout Texas.
Among the artists commissioned for the work
were such notables as Victor Arnautoff, Jerry
Bywaters, Edward Chavez, Otis Dozier, Alex-
ander Hogue, Peter Hurd, Tom Lea, Ward
