Judge liohci'tn Is u a Carolinian and

Texas. He served for u time as dis-
trict attorney u number of years us
district jurlgo and several years before
the war was elected one of t lie supreme
judges which position lie held till he
resigned It In order to command a reg-
iment during tlie war in which capac-

vigiliint and klnd-liemted soldier be-
loved by his men. lie also presided

to the United States .senate but were
not admitted to their scats. This num-
mary covers Judge Roberts' public ser-
vloe which It will bo seen has heou
ample and (exempting the two bliort
conventions named bus had no con-
nection with political ofllee. ..- As a
lawyer he bus ruuked for u (luarter of
u century ns ono of tho most profound
iii Texas though as u speaker ho never
attained distinction. Iu political faith
ho hus uever swerved from the doc-
trines of Jefl'ersouiau Doinouraey. As
union his whole life has been an il-
lustration of morality honor and
kinduess. Knowing him ns wo have
for so long a time we rejoice at hts ap-
pointment nnd honor Uovernor Coke
for his selection.
Ueubeu A. Reeves our fellow-townsman
by jeeeut locution hus long
ranked among tho foremost lawyors of
the Stuto tho friend und compeer of
Ku.sk Henderson Reagan und the
other chief lights of East Texas. He
ulso served long as dist rict judge and
for a term w as oue of the Supreme
court In both stations proving his tit-
ness and winniug the respect of the
country. Ho is too close to us to nllow
of 6ur upeaking of his qualities as a
man. It is enough to say Govur Coke
bus given great satisfuctlou by select-
ing him. Wo should also say that
while a soldier lu the army during the
war the people selected him to the
same place to which' lie is now ap-
pointed.: )
George F. Moore long practiced law
at Nacogdoches aud In some respects
was considered the ablest lawyer in the
State though he uever enjoyed orator-
ical powers. During tho wur and
again lu 18G0 he was elected to the
Supreme court having been displaced
by ? military order; with Governor
Tbrockinjrton. from his arrival Ju
Texas to this time we have noverbcard
ought against his private or public life.
On the contrary he stunds spot leas be-
fore the people and will honor the
bench. While both he and Judge
Reeves Lave always been consistent
Democrats neither has sought politi-
cal life.
ThouWj. Devlue! of Sau -Antonio
eame to Texas about 1644. About 1S40-7
he located u San Antonio; and for a
period of twelvo yearn before the war
was district jinlne regarded all the
while as one of the ablest in the State
and a man of most exemplury doDort-
mcnt heightened by a public- spirit
which sustained all useful enterprises
in his (tectum. He was In the conven-
tion of lsui; Durlni? the war he was
Confederate States Judgo for Texas.
For a time after the surrender he was
Imprisoned iu Fort Jackson below
New Orleans. Judge Devlne is In the
prime of life a man of great courage
aud iu his convictions too fraiik ever
to he concerned in anything calculated
to betniy lliu public wolliiro. Though
never holding political olllce ho has
Hlwuys been ii Slates Right Democrat.
Taken individually or collectively
we now have a Supreme court of tried
uhlllly umiiiestloned purity and la-
borious Imbits fur which every well-
wisher of tlie country will be thiiiikl'ul.
('oinpureil with the past four years It
Is liko beautiful Minshlno lifter u long

young man of superior talent and lino

We nro not aeipiiiliilod with Mr A.
W. Dcberry the new secretary of State
uorMr O. P Campbell tho new In-
HpcctoMif tho penitentiary but tuke it
for grunted they are proper men or
Governor Coke would not have ap-
pointed them.
Since wi lting tho foregoing article
wo have leurtied by private telegrams
received iu Dallas that the other Judge
of the new Supremo court Is Mr. Wil-
liam V. llnlliiiKcr of Galveston. To
all prominent lawyers of Texas the
mention of the name Is sulllcient
nut this Is a matter In which tho peo-
ple ate Interested and im we know Mr.
Ilullenger very well for lo! these many
years we will give our opinion of him
uud his political pedigree so far us we
know. . -
William '.' Halllngcr Is a native of
tlie mountains or what Is known as
tho knob region of Kentucky. He
was born and bred a Kentucky Henry
Clay Whig and iu hiscurlicr manhood
ilielined decidedly to the old Federal
notions of government. We use the
word "Federal" In the sense in which
it wus used In tlie days of Jcllcrson und
Adams.'" - .
Locating as a lawyer iu Galveston
some twenty-four years ago it young
mini while iu no modern sense a rab-
ble rousing orator his knowledge of
law his upright conduct his studious
habits nnil his moral integrilyjsoongave
him a high position at tlie bar both iu
the State and federul courts. For years
he was employed on one side or the
other of nearly every Important hind
case iu the United States District court
of Texns and lu almost every one ad-
ded to his reputation. Declining all
openings for political life lie studious-
ly devoted his lino mind to (lie law.
I'nder President Fillmore lie ' was
United Slates attorney for Texas the
only olllce as fur us we remember he
ever held
Doubting tho policy of secession
yet as u line son of his State lie stood
by Texas dining the wur us his adopt
ed mother. - Since tlie war us the sen
lor member of tho legal linn of Rul-
linger Juck & Mott of Galveston his
name lias continued to grow os one of
the most honest able and philosophi
citl luwyeis of Texas. As a nputid
contributor to the pros of various arti-
cles on our former political condition
lie ranks with Madison Jay and Ham
ilton as tho authors of the Federalist
and occasionally makes one think of
the brilliant strokes of Junius.
In no sense is .Mr. Jinllinger a politi-
cian or olUce-seeker. He is simply a
great lawyer and honest man. As such
he is worthy to sit on tho Supremo
court bench of Texas and wo aro glad
he Is there.
l'HOI'INOII J AC OH IIOIX.
Wo mo truly glad to say that this
distinguished Swiss naturalist the
friend and lato assistant of the lament-
ed Agassi. has arrived here with the
determliiutloii of muking Dallas his
future home. He is a member of the
Imperial Academy of Natural History
In Dresden Prussiii and has the high-
est testimonials from Agassi and
other eminent sources.
Professor Boll proposes to lay the
foundation for a museum of natural
curiosities oves plants animals in
sects etc. in Dallas aud would be glml
to receive from the people In nil parts
uny specimens in any of the branches
named which may for the present be
delivered to his brother Mr. Henry
Roll nu old citizen of this place.
The ndvantuges of such a man of
practical science being in a young and
developing Stuto like Texas will be
manifest to all. His explanations an
alysis and investigations will if en
couraged In a liberal spirit prove of
great value to our agricultural and
manufacturing Interests.
By the Tyler Index we learn of the
death of the wife of the Rev. Dr.
James H. Strlbling in that town on
January 22d.
Thirty-seven years ago when a
ranger boy on the soutuw esteru fron
tier of fexas we made the acquaint-
ance of James II. StrihJing theu a boy
about our own aire from Washington
county. For several years succeeding
whenever Indians or Mexicans tnvaded
the country we were almost sure to
meet among tho volunteer rangers
"Jim Stribliug" aud came to love
him as a brother. At tho bloody
battle of Saludo in 1842 no two sol-
diers Were more marked for cool and
Tearless ceurngo than he and the Rev.
Daniel Carl a Methodist preacher
from Tennessee then official ing on a
circuit lu southwest Texns. After
that James H. Strlbling completed his
education at Baylor University studied
for tho ministry and for nearly thirty
years lias been a most able faithful
and self-denying preacher in the Bap-
tist church. Long long ago he mar-
ried a lovely daughter of Col. Cleve
land at Gonzales and she has been an
angelic companion to hlni ever Biuoe.
When we read of her deatn In tho
Tyler paper yesterday ! all tnose dear
old associations came up and in volun
tarily we exclaimed " God bless our
old friend."
