We mean all that scoiio of coiintiy
(where the soil Is good) lying west of a
line drawn from the northwest corner
of Wise county .southeast Id the head
ol the San Salia river and tliu nioutli of
Devils river on the l!io (Iraiule or
thereabouts.
In Hie summer of I M! we served In
command of a company of Texas ran-
ge M on tho northwestern frontier.
During nearly Hie whole season show-
ers of rain fell every (wo or three days
resembling tliu commencement of the
rainy season in tlio valley of Mexico.
On reaching- the country below in Mc-
Lennan ami Hell no rain had fallen in
all that time. That truly was but a
single season and proved nothing. Hut
weul'terwards met an old pioneer I'roin
laimar county who. told us that for
seven summers he had gone to that
country to kill bulliilo and each time
had found tliu same general facts
abundant rains north of that range of
timber-covered hills while it was more
or less drouthy below.
Again repenting our Ignorance of
scientific matters yet believing these
common sense observations of our cll-
mutlo laws are worthy of consideration
by practical scientists wo Invito their
attention to them. Hclnnce except in
so far as It bcnellls mankind is worth-
less .Hut when it taught the good
housewife how lo make butter cheese
bacon egg corn bread biscuit and pies
and tlio-husbandman how to make
cotton woolen goods plows axes hoes
reapers mowers etc. it conferred a
henellt to mankind AH these sprang
from science common as they are to-
day. The naked negro of central Africa
to tills day understands neither one.
Hence we Invito men of science to
consider the points to Vi'hieli wo have
referred and see If out of them they
cannot deduce great truths to bring
blessings to our country.
AV'hllo wo expect to recur to this
subject In connection with a review of
the lamented Commodore Maury's
physical geography tlio best of the
kind ever published we desire to enlist
tho attention of Intelligent farmers
throughout our country. Tho basis of
all prosperity throughout the world i.s
the production of the soil. Tho granger
movement may or may not. bo wise
but if wisest must avail itself of all
tho natural laws which atl'ect produc-
tion. They admit no one (as we under-
stand their creed) to membership who
Is not a farmer. If this is true they
are foolish men for tho good reason
that thousands of men are the best
friends of tlio farming interest who are
notjln fact fanners. Weclaiintol4W
that class and stand ready to compare
facts with any and all farmers in the
country.. One idead men never made a
country. AVell balanced minds tak-
ing iii a wide scope of subjects aflbrd
tho best average guaranty.
