for working tho mines to arrive from
Ht. Louis lie exhibited to us several
specimens of the ore which seemed to
us to ho very l'ii'h indeed. The llnest
specimen was a tniui't rock found
about live feet below tho level of the
ground and Is said to contain about
ill'ty or sixly per cent of silver. An-
other specimen found about fourteen
feet below tho surface. Is ijuimosed to
contain about eighty-five per cent of
silver. J lo thinks tlmt lower tlown
almost solid silver will bo found lie
sent on tho specimens to tSt. Louis to
have them tested. Ho informs us Unit
there arc t wo stores at tho mines uud
another about three miles oil' all doing
a good business. A company will soon
arrive from Fort Smith and another
from Jlentonvillo with the necessary
mining machinery. A saw-mill wiil
also soon bo created at the mines.
These initios are situated in Sevier
county about eighty-live miles west of
Arkailelphitt in a wild and hilly coun-
try. There is a direct road lending to
them from this place. We understand
that sevt'i'til persons are going up from
this place lo try their hands at mining.

Tun extnivnguneo of General li rant's
administration is cxcmplillcd in the
nnrltiplioily of new ollices that have
been created since ho came into power.
In 185!) tho number of employes of the
federal government was 44oU7. In
lSlil the first year of the war the num-
ber increased to 4(i)4!i. In lijli") the
year the war closed there were f)3lh7.
In 1807 after the enormous labors
growing out of tho war had been
mainly completed there were 501 1:1.
feneral ( Jrunt came into olllce in l(i!l
und in two years that is in 1871 six
years alter the close of the war the
number of employes had run up to
57U0o lsylbii) eight years after the
war the num ber had increased to 8ti(j()0.
These are oltioial figures and they
show tbut during the present adminis-
tration in a period of profound peace
and after a sutHcicnt lapse of time to
dispose of the bulk of the unsettled
business left by tho war the army of
olllce holders has been increased by a
re-enforcement of over 30000 men.
The end is i(ot yet ami the demand
for more men and more money is still
he(ng made. If tho postal telegraph
and railroad schemes and some of the
other pet jobs should be accomplished
before the end of his present term.
General Grant would again be at the
head of as large an army as that which
lie led in to Virginia Courier-Journal.
