An iiitdruNR having liocn rem! by La-
dy Herbert tlio iione replied an. follows:
"It in witb very great plutwure that I
accent thin bee. ut'i fill oilerinjr from my
children of the British inlt'H. Amid the
numberless manifestation of afluctioii
for the holy nee wliich havu consoled
me in my tribulations those of thu
English people have been conspicuous
and are very dear to my heart. At this
moment revolution disorder aud
every species of infidelity are rampant
over tho whole world andyetEugland
is giving me every day fresh proofs of
iter fidelity and devotion. When I
look back to fifty years ago. no one
could have believed that such an ex-
pression of feeling as this would have
emeimted from a country which had
been for three hundred years torn from
the ttue faith and given up to heresy
and schism.
In the gospel of tills day you have
read how our Lord appeared to St. Ala-
ry Magdalen in the garden and thus
rewarded her faithful love. He ap-
peared to her under the form of a gar-
dener. And so he is in reality tending
the flowers and plants he bus chosen
for himself and weeding out carefully
from tiie soil all that is noxious and
rank. Let us recommend ourselves
then to this good gardener that be
may root out of our hearts all that is
displeasing to him. lint I sue by your
address that tho same thought has
passed through your own minds and
that you seek for me as for yourselves
that one only source of consolation
to be united with our suil'ering Lord.
Gladly then do I bless you and your
families and all those who have taken
art in this generous and graceful oilcr-
mg. And you dear daughter of mine
must be my Interpreter to all those
dear children and tell them how
much I value not bo much the amount
of their gift (thougli it Is very large)
as tho affection and devotion to the
holy nee of which it is the expression.
May God abundantly bless you and
them and all who have contributed to
this touching offering."
fouiinir Moth and Rhcep.
Wo have repeatedly urged for years
past the importance of turning flocks
of sheep and swino into orchard at the
time tho young and wormy fruit is
dropping. These animals will get at
least a part of them. One of the moat
successful experiments in this way is
Joseph Harris of Itochester. HefeLves
in a late Agriculturist some striking
proofs of the advantages of the prac-
tice. He holds the codling moth in
cbejk in one orchard by pasturing it
with sheep. Auother orchard forty
years old has always been used as a
hog pasture and the apples are entirely
free from the codling moth. Outside
the orchard in which the sheep run is
a row of seven trees which produced
last year from two to five barrels of ap-
ples per tree and being unprotected by
animals from the codling moth all the
good apples from these seven trees
Wiire put into one barrel. In hisgarden
where tho animals can not run from
fifty sorts of dwarf apples there is
scarcely a fair specimen.
A Youxa Boston mechanic saw an
overcoat in a second-hand clothing
store which he thought he would be
glad to possess at reasonable price.
"How much?" he asked. "Twenty-
ono dollars" was tho answer. The
usual haggling took place and the me-
chanic started to leave the store. "How
much you gif?" asks the merchant.
"Three dollars." "Take it then. I
shall shust he ruin of myself. I only
make two dollars on dat coat ze help
me gracious."
A Georoia negro who bet ten dol-
lars that General Washington com-
manded the federals at Bull Kun hand-
ed tho money over with tho remark:
"Well dis yere hist'ry business Is all
mixed up anyway."
