A Fearful Affluent at the Fair
Ground Yesterday.
A Large Attendance From All
Parts of the Country.
The Fair Conceded to be the Best
Ever Held In the State.
IIoi'hto.v May 'Jf). fiurful acci-
dent lmpiioneil lu Tower hull at the
fulr at 11 o'clock IhiH morning. Julm
Green colored of lloimton in crawling
under some machinery wan caught by
a clrculur saw anil had one arm cutoff
lieHldeHouo foot nearly so being sawed
through the bones. Green wax taken
to the city.
There is a largo attendance here from
all parts of the Mate and crowds are
Mtlll arriving. All express themselves
well pleased with the exhibition and
the fair Ik generally conceded to ho the
boHt ever held here. Weather clear
and very warm.
SECOND wsrATcn.
The Uayou City to-day presents one
of the liveliest scenesever witnessed In
Texas. An immense crowd Is gath-
ered hero from all parts of the stale in
attendance at the annual state fair.
Many persons think It is the largest
gathering they have ever hnd here.
An address was delivered before the
Texas veterans. I regret that I was
unable to be present and therefore can
give no account of it.
It Is thought the negro that was In-
jured this morning by being caught in
somo agricultural machinery will die.
The Kansas City delegation is here
and much pleased with our city and
state.
To-morrow will be the gala day.
ARKANSAS.
After the Battle A Seventy
Thousand Dollar Bill to Foot.
An Attempt to Destroy the City
of Little Bock by Fire.
Little Rock May 20. General
Newton has turned the control of the
city over to the civil authorities aud
tbo mayor has a large force of extra
jwlleo on duty. He is to call on the
military if he requires aid.
Governor Baxter is holding a levee
at the state bouse.
An attempt was made to fire thecity
to-day by some villain setting fire to a
lot of bedding in a building on Scott
street. In an adjoining building was a
large lot of amunition. The tire was
extinguished aud a general conflagra-
tion prevented.
The work of tearing down the barri-
cades and repairing and cleaning the
state bouse will cost at least twenty
thousand dollars. .
THE BESESVOIR HORROR.
Further Particulars of the Mill
River Disaster.
A Large Number of Bodies Dug
from the Debris.
Result of Bad Workmanship and
Carelessness.
Springfield Mass. May 20. Twen-
ty of the missing have been dug from
the ruins of buildings and sand. Twenty-five
known to be lost are still in the
debris.
A committee of the legislature find
the specifications were not fulfilled by
tbo contractors in thejcontruetlon ot
the reservoir.
Fifty thousand dollars have been
contributed for the relief of the victims-
It appears that the walls of the res-
ervoir were required to be built three
feet below the ground. The contrac-
tors based them on the surface mak-
ing the calamity a mere question of
time.
The contractors will be banged if
caught. The empty reservoir exposes
the villainy practiced by the contrac-
tors. The bodies found yesterday were
nude and . much disfigured.
It will requirp a wee o qncj al the
missing. I'eople are earning money
by searching for models and brass.
Derricks have been erectetl to lift
the safes from the streams most of
which are intact. They were all locked
at an early hour of the flood.
The streams are being diverted from
. their natural channels to save the
spoils of the flood.
'The latest figures of the loss of life
make the total number one hundred
and forty-four divided as follows be
tween the three places: Williamsburg
Bixty Leeds forty-nine HaydenvJUe
thirty-five.
These figures only represent persons
fpose lose is positively known though
bodies of all are not yet recovered.
llodles are constantly being found and
ill i onto cases those pciitonn who were
nut supposed to be lost so that it seems
perfectly sufe to say that the total loc
of life will exceed oiiu hundred aud
fifty If it does not more neatly ap
