Xkw Yokk June 2!). J. 15. Carpen-
ter mentioned in Tilton's letter to'
Uueehur as thelpersonvho hud Inform-
ed him that mouey could be obtained to
scud Tilton and family to Europe if
willing to go has been iuterivewed
and said. A few daysjafter the adjourn-
ment of the council I had occasion to
call upon Mr. Ueecher ut his house in
connection with iv matter wholly dis-
connected from the scandal.
In the course of some frieutlly con-
versation I mentioned the fact to be
that Tlltou has just iinlshed his
book on which ho had been engaged
for a year and added that tho excite-
ment of the council had depressed him
considerably and that I in common
with other friends wished ho could go
to Europe. Mr. Jieecher said that he
thought it would be an excellent thing
for him to do.
In reply to this I said recent busi-
ness embarrassments stood m the way
to which Ucechcr answered that if
Tilton desired to go means would be
provided. I did not understand by any-
thing said by Mr. Beecher that he
made the proposition in order to secure
Mr. Tilton's silence in regard to the
scandal. The matter only came up in-
cidentally on this subject and he could
hardly have expected that I would
bring it up. I told Tilton what
Beecher had said and it enraged him
greatly although it was a long time
afterward that I learned he had writ-
ten to Mr. Mr. Beecher about this
thing.
