Captain James Lee of the Mi-amer
K. Francis which arrived from below
this morning says that after the lie-
1 groes who bad Austin surrounded were
repulsed yesterday they disappeared
and the story was soon circulated that
they were murdering the women and
children left unprotected on the sur-
rounding plantations which caused
the men who hail been defending the
place to start for their homes to pro-
tect their families.
Austin was soon left without any de-
fenders except one or whito men
nmt the negroes came in and took pos-
session and proceeded to break open
the saloons and stores and help them-
selves. At last accounts they had com-
mitted no ucts of violence toward the
few whites who were nimble to get
nway but they were becoming drunk
and fears were entertained that they
would burn tho village. Messengers
were sent to Captain Lee asking him to
land there but he had u large number
of refugee on board some of ivhom
the negroes had threatened to kill Dr.
Phillips late republican member of
the legislature being umong tin! num-
ber and they begged him not to do so.
He passed on up without lauding. It is
proper to state that politics have noth-
ing to do with this trouble and that
Mayor Woodson ami a number of other
men who have been proscribed by tho
negroes are repul licans.

A few weeks ago when at Dr. F. L.
Yoakum's of Lnris.-a in Cherokee
county 1 suggested to him that he pre-
pare ii new edition id- his brother' his-
tory of Texas. He toitl me that he
hail at command the nmmiscrlpls mid
papers of his brother Hie historian
besides much other material ucipiireu
during a long residence in (lie state.
The historian left a large amount of
unpublished matter. Yesterday 1 re-
eehed u letter from Dr. Yoakum stat-
ing that "after mature consideration
he hail concluded to re-write his hrotb-
er's history and continue It to the
time of going to press." Ho wishes to
cooperate In this matter with the Tex-
as historical society and with nil who
have reliable unpublished historical
material.
Dr. Yoakum is well rjimlllled for (he
work. He was prctiiileut of the old
Larissa college during many years un-
til it win suspended by the war when
he was appointed mineralogist ami
botanist for the Trans-Mississippi de-
partment. Since then he was professor
elect of physical science of Trinity
university but his business at LarisMi
ilitl not permit him to accept Hie posi-
tion lie is also a member of several
learned societies.
Yoakum's history of Texas has be-
come very rare and Is I believe the
heft history of the state yet published
but we now are promised a much heller
work ; 1 ay better work for Dr. Yoak-
um has and will have a large amount
of now and valuable material.
