WHAT THE TKXAH l'lll.NN UVHt l0.
There are three hundred and llfty
proprietors in this state ekliifr out a
bare exigence in tho ptibllu-Hpirited
eftrirt to build up thut many town.
Many of them have been inveigled
Into starting papeis and have thus
been loft to hold the bag. The pu'
tronuge meagerly dolod out to them is
as niggardly as It lmmcertulu. The
difficulty with the Texas press Ih just
this: that It sudors Itself to be ridden
' to death by loeul politicians charities
and friends. Its bills are the lust paid
It is taxed every day for this or thut
public matter and is expected to
maintain itself on the promises of de-
linquents. There is but one way to
get It upon Us legs and make every
)aperself-supportingaud thutlsacush-down-on-the-nall
business. Tho news-
paper business has not tho same back-
ing facilities that are extended toother
lines of business because of the pecu-
liar nature of newspaper property. In
order therefore to get on the press
must as a matter of self-preservntlnn
adopt the the ofllce regulations of the
telegruph companies the express com
panies or the poHtoftlce. It is like
them a peculiar institution and should
deul with the public alike. It will save
a world of bother and worry and In
this way tho press can nlono enforce
the oash system and maintain Itself as
a business.
DAIXAtf AN AKM V HKADtl) AKTEKN.
There can bo no question that Dallas
is more oonvenlent to the frontier and
r accessible Iroui tho other parts of the
couutry than 8uu Antonio. Look at
tho line of posts; exiuuiuo the dis-
tances between Dallas and them ami
then suy whether or not the headquar-
ters of the department would not be
best for the service if located here in-
stead of San Autonlo which is quite
out of the way has no railroad com-
munication and is not as near the
' fields in which the troops are stationed
and operate as Dallas Is. The estab-
lishment of the headquarters of
the general commanding tho de-
partment here would be agree-
able socially and advantageous
commercially. Dallas is Just thut
much nearer St Louis the headquar-
ters of General Sherman command
ing the army and in strikjug distance
of the wild Indians as well us the half
Civilized ones who are In the nation.
It is to be regretted that neither the
secretary of war nor General Augur
the accomplished soldier and chrlstiun
gentleman now commanding in Texas '
should not have paid our city a visit
In order that they might have seen fur
themselves and the matter has been
brought before them for consideration.
Ban Antonio would go into HpnSmB
over the bare idea of movlug the army
headquarters from there to alive place
but it cannot be helped. We want
headquarters here.
