Governor Hartranft has signed the
death warrant of Thomas Fisher one of
tho Mollie Maguires concerned in the
murder -in 1871 of Morgan Powell bus
periutendent of a coal mine-in Carbon
county. Fisher did not actually par-
ticipate in the brutal assassination of
Powoll but he took an active part in
securing the services of "Yellow Jack"
Donohue executed at Mauch Chunk
on the memorable -21st of June to corns
mit the crime and afterwards paid the
murder S.'JO which ho had collected for
the purpose for the bloody work he had
done. Powell was shot by Donohuo in
the evening as ho had emerged from a
store the murderer and several accom-
plices lying in wait for him in the vi-
cinity. Among others besides Fisher
implicated iu the crime were Alexander
Campbell hanged on tho same gallows
with Edward Kelly and Thomas Doyle
tho murderers of John II. Jones also a
mine superintendent and "Yellow
Jack" Donohue. Campbell had aho
borne a prominent part in the ass.issis
nation of Jones and Policeman Yost
of Tamaqua Schuylkill county for
whose death five Mollie Maguires suffer-
ed death'on the gallows at Pottsvillo
on tho 21st of June. Sentence of death
had not been pronounced on Thomas
P. Fisher when tho other Carbon coun-
ty murderers were executed although
he had been convicted. He was soon
afterward sentenced to be hangod and
a death warrant was issued by the gov-
ernor fixing tho 10th of September for
tho execution. An appeal to the su-
premo court on a writ of error interrup-
ted the hanging. An unfavorable de-
cision having been rendered in his case
the governor to-day issued his second
death warrant designating the lltUh of
February for tho execution.
