Massacre by Vien.
Lesdrllle Democrat.
Mr. Blake Burton who since last summer
had run the French bakery near tho corner
of Harrison and Jefferson avenues left Load-
ville April last with a party of companions
for the purpose of prospecting in the Ute
reservation. Since his departure nothing had
been hear I from bim until a letter received
by his friends in Leadville Friday evening
last brought intelligence of his capture by
the Ute Indians on the borders of the reser-
vation and of the foul massacre of the other
prospectors. In the interim of silence his
friends entertained the greatest anxiety for
bis safetv and were greatly relieved to learn
that he is still living though his life is held
at the mere v of the hostile savages. The let
ter is in Burton's handwriting and is traced
with a pencil on an oblong piece of the
roughest kind of brown paper.
It is addressed to Miss Jennie Ferguson
box 2483 Loadville Colorado. Tho Fergu-
son family live on the corner of Ilomluck and
Tenth streets. Mrs. F. rgdson was a partner
of Mr. Burton in the bakery business. Mr.
Burton used all aailable strategy in endeav-
oring to communicate with his 'friends since
his capture. Ho used corn bus .s and buck-
skin for previous letters and secreted them in
the pelts forwarded by the Indians thinking
that they would fail into the hands of sjine
0110 that would torward thorn to his friends.
This letter done up in buckskin he tied
under the imino of a ponv which was stolen
by the Indians iiud had to be returned. The
letter was found by a cow-boy named John
Coleman and forwarded as direcU-d. It rends
as follows:
Camp N eab Wihtk ltivnu Agkncy
May 14 lfj.
"Mls Jenuio Kurgii'ou:
"I will write once more and hope it will
reach vou some timo. This I will tie under
tho mane of a pony stulon by tho Utes which
will be returned to-morr v morning; at least
they take them away every morning all that
the scattering band bring into camp. Am
well and think I woigh more than whon I
lrft. To-morrow night I think if every-
thing goes woll I will make my escape. This
may be discovered by some ona and mailed to
you. There wore two others captured at tho
same timo I was but tbey were killed. This
is the fourth time 1 have written to you ana
vou must have rocoived some of my letters. I
gave you tho full particulars of my capture
in an 01 tnem.
"Dsn't be uneasy about me as I do not
think there is any danger of a scalping
match as I have made friends with several
braves cbiofs Chawumpel and Powauha. I
lost my mules wagon and all the grub. The
Frenchman and two other fellows that were
along were to raft across the Gunnison river
at Lake Fork while I went below to cross
and meet them. 1 never saw them since. I
don't kuow whether they were killed or cap-
tured or not
"I wrote you one lettor witb. red pk on
buckskin and corn busks and put them
among some pelts they were sending oil'.
Toll undo to write mother and say I am
well and in the Gunnison country. Will
writo to you as soon as I get to a postotliee ;
then I will expect an answer from you.
With much love to all I remain
Yours etc.. B. B."
"P. S. I took this off the pony to write
s 'me more. 'Hope you are woll and doing
well in your new place. It seems about
two years since I left Leadville. I am going
to try and gut my gun back again. If I do
I will lay out twb more red dovils if they
don't let me go. But they watch me very
close day and night.
"I can go anywhere in day timo. Thoro is
one old buck who can understand a little
English. I have plenty of 'catry' that is
meat and 'trouchee' trout. I can beat
thorn all catching them as I had a hook in
my hat baud at:d that pleases them sind
amuses them. They all turn out iu tho
morning as soon as it i3 warm and catch
grasshoppers. There is a lake near by full of
'troucnee.' "AniorsK Sign'okkttk
"Muncha muticha
"Lovo to you."
"Please mail to Miss Jennie Fergu-on box
2483 Leadville Col."
A note writton by the cow boy Coleman
and inclosed with the letter read as fol-
lows: "Miss Ferguson this letter was done up in
buckskin and tied on 0:10 of my pories that
was sold by the Utes in May. This is the
first post-office I have struck and I put this
in hope you will got it.
"John Coleman Cow-Boy."
It would appear from the lettor and Dote
that the Utes were compelled to return the
stolen ponies either at the instance of the
government or their chiefs. It is hoped by
the friends of Burton that some effort will be
ma e to compel the Utes to give up their
captive whose life is in danger at any mo-
ment i f he is still in the hands of tho savages.
Miss Jennie Ferguson to whom the letter
is directed is not in the city having left
Wednesday for Colorado Springs where
Burton's uncle is living.

Feels Young Again.
"My mother was afflicted a long time with
neuralgia and a dull heavy inactive condi-
tion of the whole system ; headache nervous
pr ostration and was almost helpless. No
physicians or medicines did her any go.d.
Three months ago she began to use Hop
Bitters with such good effect that she seems
and feels young again although over seventy
years old. We think there is no other medi-
cine fit to use in the family." A lady in
