Your Muxin correspondent is at presotit rus-
ticating in tho piny woods of Anderson coun-
ty and proposes to ive you a brief account
of what h i has seon nnd teamed since his
sojourn on Wells' creek. This poiu is a
little i amlet not yet christened but has a
population o' probably thirty or forty kind-
hearted and hospitable people. It is located
about tivo utile oast of Neohesville in a fer-
tile though undeveloped section of coir try.
It owes its chief importance to the expen-
sive lunibor business it does. Tho
steam' saw-mills undor the management

thousand feet of lumber per day which is
sent to all parts of Toxas for building pur-

the fall notwithstanding the school popula-

have been deniod the privileges of education
for the most partbut its necessity has become
sufficiently apparont to guarantoe a tive
measures towards supplying this want.
Tho rains of tho recent past havo been copi-

done. Cotton and corn arc the staple pro-

so aparcely settled that sufficient labor can
scarcely be procured to put them in lawful
condition. I was forcible imnruud uitk
the evidence of decline in the prosperity of
those part of Anderson county throurh
which I have traveled. Especially is this
apparent in the vicinity of Mound Prairie
where yet exist proofs of former
wealth and influence. The school
buildings at this place where
once taught one of the most ominont educa-
tors of Texas have fallen asunder and noth-
inir remains of her classic walls but disorder
and confusion. Tho community burial
grounds adjoining these promises have bo-
come commons where the neighborhood stock
have troe access. The church building is
gone and the homes of the wealthy planter

Washington Aug. 11. A gentleman here
who claims to be specially informed with
reference tj the propoted invasion of Mexico
says that the purpose of the movement
which will go on despite the governmental
iutortorence is a fixed desi e to wrench from
the Mexican government the statos of Sono-
ra Chihuahua and Salona in the north
western part of Mexico and to convert them
Into an Independent confedoraay. The bene
ficiaries of the scheme he says are to be the
inhabitants of those states and the mine own-
era of southern New Mtxico and Arizona.
The inhabitants themselves expect to be
benefitted by collecting and retaining for
themselves the large revenues of their ports
which now accrue entirely to the benefit of
the City of Mexico. They say they have no
interest whttever in common with the other
states of the republic and do net understand
why it should be incumbent upon them to
wake sacrifloos for which they get no re
turns. On the other hand the miners long
for the possession of the rich mountains
whoso proximity is a constant temptation.
In addition to tho mining excellences which
the mountains of Chihuahua and Selena
have in common with those of Aanzona and
New Mexico they have the advantage of an
abundance of water. Consequently the mi-
ners are vory willing to give such substantial
encouragement as mon y and arms to the
movement an 1 aid it otherwise in any way that
thoy may. The gentlemen say that should
the movement succeed and a confederacy be
establiahed.the plan is to. nut it at once upon
nrm t'asu by issuing Donds wiin tne mines
as securi'y and develop the minr s with the
money so raised.

Washington Aug. 10. A duol was
fought this afternoon in the upper part of
the district neor the Soldiers' home. The
parties participating have so far succeeded in
keeping their names and motives from the
public but the police are after them and the
facts in the case will soon bo known. Six
men were prese't coming upon the
ground in two carriages. Immedi-
ately after pacing off the ground
thirty feet tho duelists took their positions
oack to Daox turnra ana dim.hj away at
the word "lire." One received a shot in
the right arm which appeared to satisfy
all concerned and jumping into their car-
riages they drove away one enrriago com-
in m by tho r-eventh street road and the
othora by cutting around the National
C( ineterv. Each partv fired a shot and
hook bands afterward and the wounded
man's arm was tied up before leaving tho
field. Ono was a large well-built man.
with black whiskers the other a small man
with light muvache. The latter was wounded.
ho camaict used anooar to bo from
city livery stable with negro drivers. Tho
wound was vory slight it is surmised that
the parties wore residents of tho district and
that there is a woman in the cae. The
whole affair did net last ten minutes. Resi-
dents of the locality believe it Vo havo boon a
mock duel gotton up to relievo tho dullness
of August. The lans of the district are very
severe in cases of dueling nnd tho authorities
will probe the matter to the bottom. A
prominent official of the district rema' ked to
night that the tmv had passed when tho bar-
barism of dueling would be allowed at tho
capital. '

AVashington Aug. 11. A report was re-
ceived at the navy department this morning
from Captain Braino commander of tho
United States steamer l'owhattnti dated oil

reports all quiet on the Cuban coast. Ho
was thon en routo for Santia o Do Cuba.
Tho roport contains no additional infornia-J

not been instructed to investigate that mat
ter it having beon thoroughly sifted by Hr
Admiral yman. Captain Braino will
however look into the matter of the
outrago on t' o Baltimore schoemer
lioorge Washington as soon as the in-
structions to that effect sent several days
since shall reach him. The special duty of
tho Pjwhattan is to eruiso in Cuban waters
until relieved and whilo thoro to loeik for
and rendor all proper assistance and protec-
tion to American interests. It is bolioved
hnre that the presence of an American man-of-war
in Cuban water will prevont any
further insults being offorod to American
veseols. It is the intention of tho govern-
ment to keep at least one vessel cruising in
Cuban waters during the summer season and
in the winter a large portion of the north
Atlantic squadron will be sent there. Captain
Braine reports the health of its officers and
crew as good.
