The Actreae mid the Sliigor Whoin Mr.

Mr. Henry . AWbey the theatrical man-
ager arrived from England yesterday. He
has engaged Mrs. Langtry the London pro-
fessional beauty and Mme. Christine Nil-

next season and Mr. Jleury Irving for the
season after that besides leasing Vt.
IrvinK's Lyceum theatre for the period ol
the actor's absence from London.'
"What is your owrt opinion ol Mrs.
I.anf;tr as au uctrosn?" Mr. Abbey was
asked.
"dhe is not a great one" he replied "ami
could not stand criticism as such; but ahe
is perfectly at ease on ilio stage notably
ladylike and so unassumiuK that she (tots
the good will ol mi audience right away.
At least that has been the case iu Kngland
and she has drawn tremendously during
her provincial tour in that country.

"What is your opinion ol Mrs. Lunglry
as a beauty?"
"1 do not think she will diaappoing rea-
sonable expectations though some of her
charms uru of no practical value on the
slBge. Her wonderfully clear complexion
for instance has to be paintod over und
her beautiful hair might us well be a wig.
If she is greatly admired by American au-
diences as 1 hope and expect it will not
be because she is tho most beautiful wo-
man ever seen on our stage for she is not
but because alio is both beautiful and Win-
some. Slio all tho whilo has a manner of
wishing you to like her and of doing her
best to pleaso. I think she is tho most un-
tillectedly ladylike woman I ever saw on

come along. Kate I'atterson 'the jiivenilo

"And Irving?"
"He doesn't come until the fall of 1S83.
He has given up his contemplated pleasure
trip to New York this summer. I have
takon tho Lyceum theatre London to

subsequent tour ili the English provinces.
My plan is to introduce American stnrs

the riskiest of my proposed ventures. Don't

Though Morrison Heady of Kentucky is
blind as a bat and deaf as a post ho is a
marvel of mechanical dexterity of Inven
tive genius and of clear and quick cogita-
tion. One seeing blm walking tho streets
of Louisville with head orect and strong
tread holding a little boy by the hand
would not Buspect his disabilities nor
watching him at the countor of a hardware
store purchasing knife would an observer
think anything of the matter unless he
happened to note that tho dealer spoke
no word but only touched the hand ol the
customer. Among his inventions is a
leather glovo with the letters of tho alpha-
bet painted on it. You can talk to him as
fast as you can touch those letters with tho
end of your linger. Another or his inven.
tlons is a mechanical writing muchine
with which ho can write and others can
transcribe Tho machino pricks its way
ulong the paper and he can read his own
writing by the sense of touch. Others can
use the machine to write out for him any-
thing not procurable iu blind type and he
cau read it with his lingers and indirectly
have accoss to the .literary gems which
would otherwise be a sealed book to him.
Usually a blind man can hear but it is
useless to read to Heady. His speech
is as clear and sharp as that of a
man ot education combined with
great forco of will and perfect faculties.
Mnce he cannot hear himself speak
the fact is a remarkable psychic puzzle lor
the best of us leorn accuracy of pronuncia-
tion and distinctness of enunciation by dint
of Iomr practice and study educating out-
solves by the aid of our earn anil eyes.
Among his other accomplishments this
uu numbers the air of poetry. Bevorul
Wars ago ho published a volume of poetry.
We have just received a pamphlet of tweii-
br pages containing some selections from
.his unpublished compositions. At every
pbintheis a master. Iambic pentameter
rolls from his machine as easily as iambic
tetrameter rippled from Scott's pen. Tho
reader who hits never seen this mail's
