with tears it was an alVecting scene
and many sturdy and bronzed men of

their coat sleeves. Ten minutes after
tho Thetis anchored tho lleur rounded
the point and soim came to an anchor in
tho wake of tho Thetis. Again yards
were manned and ngain gallant seamen
gave three rousing cheers which were
repeated w hen the Alert steamed slow ly

to receive tho commanding ollleers of
t he relief squadron and w ithin half at'

many that not u single gun had becii
firoil in honor of the arrival of the re-

and tho quietness of the dem-

on. To ovoid public' ly much
as possible Secretary Chandler ar-

of the Secroalaiy of the Navy. As com-

who clasped his hand witli fervor ami
passing one arm over his shoulder
Haiti in a voice almost smothered with
emotion: "I am glad (o welcome you

Alert was next introduced and in un-
Htvor to the enquiry of Secretary Chan-

in my life it seems to have agreed
with us." Lieutenant Ktuory of the
liear was next ushered into the Secre-

welcome from tho representative of the
navy department. After a brief and in-
formal conversation between Command

Chandler ' the former looked
anxiously around tho oabin and gradu-

with' gloom. Surgeon (icneral Jerrell
noticing the look ot disappointment
which had overspread the Commander's
countenance stepped forward saying:

Many were l he appeals made by all
classes of peoplo to Secretary Chandler
to permit them to g' on I mini the

It was 'noticeable on board tho Thetis

Accepting an invitation from a mem-

afternoon was rapidly whirled toward
tho grounds on which the mammoth en-
campment of wearers of tho gray and
the blue is to occur during tho week at

wore squads of workmen tilling in the
rough places in tho road and otherwise
preparing for tho tremendous travel

Neariug the locality tho landscape in-
creased in pietiiresqueness giving a

been noted for its loveliness but tho re-
porter was not prepared to greet the
magnificent view which tho ground.-

Entering by the lake front along which
the Missouri Pacific railroad lias erected
a commodious platform the entire
length of the tvvelve-coacli train which
will run half-hourly every day during
the reunion the reporfer was struck bv
the masterly arrangement of every de-
tail. The grounds gently slope
loward the ervslal lake with
its bounty-bower of 'mi Island in the cen-

and overhead tho leafy brunches of in-
numerable trees; a rippling spring of
clear cohl water and a profusion of scuts
scattered here and tnere for the wearv

by nature and art. Arranged in a Hctni-

A reporter attended the lin il rehearsal
last evening for thiseiieiianting oratorio.
No amateur entertainment has ever
been presented to a Dallas audience
which w ill be so thoroughly en jovahlc
as this and luit very few if 'any! of the
celebrated high-priced opera ' troupes
that have visited our city have a Horded
so rare a musical treat to our citizens us
the rendition of ihU superb cantata w ill

evenings next. The soloists arc in ex-
cellent vuieo and training ami not onlv
dug their parts well lint act Ihein in a
manner lo greatly enhance their interest.
Tho duetts trios and qunrtetts are ar-
ranged to gi vo nest scope to tlie singer
and ino-t pleasing effects while all the
choruses vv ill lie sung in a manner ill
oucecll'ectiv o and grand. The costumes
will present a most billiaut effect. No
expense has been spared no labor how-
ever arduous thought too severe to ren-
der tho liniil rendiiioii most thoroughly
pleasing and satisfactory to the public.
No one in the city should lail to hear it
at least once and it is predicted that
many w ho hear it tlio first night w ill go
again and again.
