Storming of l'ckln."
Nkw YonK July 30. Correspond-
ence. Evorywhero we go in and
about this (Treat comuioreiul city
o find somo new attraction or
soino wonderful acliieveiuent of man.
The great East Uiver bridge with its
towering piers of niassivo granite looms
up over housetop and steeple and can
be seen at a great distunco against the
blue sky. Tho four immense cables
ith a strcuth of 12'JOO tons to each
jh iugs high above tlio tallest masts of
ihips and joins Hrooklyn with Now
l'ork. It is a grand architectural mon-
ument of genius science and bravery
and the immense amount of money of
$1 1000000. tars compelled by station-
ery engines convey passengers across
the bridge or one cart walk over for one
rent. Wo stood on tho bridge one eve
ning about qusk anu watched tho ves-
sels pass under the bridge and the peo-
ple aboard seemed like specks of bluck
and white from this great height.
What a magnificent view we
hail of the two cities washed
on every sido by either river buv
sound or ocean bearing on their spark-
ling surface merchandise from everv
land! What a vast opportunity for
trade; vessels on every side from the
(treat iron steamships down to the busy
little tuns mat propels t no Heavily
Iwluii canal-boats to their destination.
Here collies an old New Yorker an en-
gine builder and one of those good
diiMo hearted men who aro always
ready to help a weary traveler
"ifow do you do Toxicals" he
niicily exclaimed. Wo laughed and
whanged greetings and finally our
conversation turned on tho topic of com-
mercial enterprise and the line harbor
of tlie city.
"Yes tlioro are seventy peers on the
East Uiver and sity-threo on the North
river. They are not in very good condi-
tion now but the water lino is to-be ex-
tended some IfiO foot and now piers built
of stone bulk heads."
"Tho rents must bring a good revenue
lo tho city" I remarked.
"Well they average now from $.'!T(K)o
to $10000 a year. That boat you see
toming bolongs to tho fStonington line.
There was a competition for her berth
and they bid $70000 for it. The People"
line there there is one of the boats
now the St. John she cost about a mil-
lionwell they own their own pier. I
suppose it is worth about $000000."
"Whoro do those immense stones come
from they aro using over there at that
piers they must weigh several tons?" 1
asked.
"They aro manufactured In the city."
"Manufactured? Thoao immense
atones!!"
"Yes.ovcrything can bo manufactured
now days from a stono pavement to a
Presidential candidate."
"Telegram 5 o'clock' shouted a little
newsdealer. "Will you havo tho World
or the Tribune" tho bov iniiuired.
Our friend selected tho World which
gave us to understand that ho was still
a Democrat. While looking over tho
city our eyes caught sight of Printing
House Miiare ami tunica tno conversa
linn on tho leading papers.
"V ou can t lind liner newspapers in
the world than wo have in New York."
said our jovial companion. "No foreign
journals spend halt the money we do in
setting news from all over civilization.
We oven hear about your 'water liiininc

one of our party.
"Well" I remarked "New Yorkers
win to think that Texas is a wild un
civilized place but allow me to inform
you that wo huvu all the latest improve
incuts and some of the most beautiful
homes of tho South where families
gutlicr around their own liresii.es in
stead of lounging around clubs."

he replied. "There goes one of tho night

anil those who arc the most expert are
rapidly promoted. The rules of tneolllco
aru very strict and no one is allowed to
use their tmx for Improper purposes."
"Have von seen the Storming of IV-

The Water Quest Ion.
Dallas Aug. li.-F.ditor Hkhai.h.i-
The trouble expense and anxiety about
water for '.he City of Dallas to a practi-
cal observer would seem to bo bused on
mistaken' views. True engineers of
lugli standing have been consulted at
heavy expense to no apparent purpose
and tho natural sources of water have
been ignored. The writer of this is not
nil engineer but ho bus eyes to see and
some practical sense to aid him in un-
rslanilmg. He is tamilnir with the
natural water resources and is of the
ipimon that the most reliable and most
eonomie mode would bo in
judiciously husbanding what may
tm secured ironi the natural
sources near the city. Undoubtedly the
present supply innv be largely in-
reused at a comparatively small cost.
and once undertaken it will soon be
understood that at least 100000 inhabi
tants may be cheaply supplied. If the
quantity of water in the tank at tho
firowder spring can. at a comparatively
small expense be doubled thero is no
doubt but a like amount each may be
collected at two dill'orent points 'from.
natural springs within tbreo miles ot
tho city. The work once begun in a
sensible way would soon develop the
fact that 'thero are living Bprings
within threo miles of Dallas which
If properly husbanded will supply sev
eral hundred thousand inhabitants and
that without the Kid sprim;.
It is evident that the city authorities
are likely under tho great prossuro that
is upon thein for u supply ol water to be
subjectod with enormous speculations
and possibly impositions which they
iiiigoi possuuv avoiu uy iiirowing a
little more ol the common sense ot prac
Ileal men into tho scale. A horn is
easier sounded by blowing in at the
little end.
It will roquiro tho tests and eatiiuntes
of an engineer to determine how and
how much water can bo accumulated;
but a (liferent cast of mind intelligence
and thought imw bo employed to direct

it Is to be accomplished. An engineer
ascertains tno allitudo ot an eminence
and tho topography of the surrounding
grounds; but tho genoral determines
their uses in tho art of war. There is a
largo amount of water from living
springs near the city or Dallas and
even insido its borders that might be
utilized that should be utilized and still
thero is no ellort in that direction.
There certainly could be nothing niori
detrimental to the progress of tho citv
than u scarcity of water. There is oer
tainlv no scarcity; there is only a want
of timt peculiar ability which is neei
sarv to suggest a proper means of util
ising it Dion

sumptuously to the manv good things

The Teius Trunk.
Dallas Aug. 2. Kditor IIkuai.p.
Those suggestions iu recent numbers of
the Hkuai.p regarding the Texas Trunk
ought to cumin mil the uttention of
everyone Interested in the prosperity ol
waiuis. rue writer docs not oner him
communication as one containing nnv
del. into plan lor raiding the money
needed to make the proposed extensions
but more to map out the possibilities of
the roan ami to cull attention lo the
great gam that would accrue to our citv
The Trunk constitutes a nucleus about
which can bo formed a growth of rail
ro-ui interests that will make Dallas one
ol the greatest railway centers in this
country and the perpetual metropolis of
.orui lexas. it is urged then that oiu
men of wealth and intlucnco our active
men - take steps lor the immediate ex
tension of this road in two direction!!
viz.: Southeast to Athens and north
west to urapevine and If possible on
to Decatur. Such a road could for
tune. bo 'operated without any
great increase of the present
rolling stock so thero need be
comparatively little expense m that di
reel ion. Push the roud first to tirnpt
vine then to Alliens or belter towards
both points at once. It is lurlbcr sug
gested that as soon as the corporation
aided bv our citizens can safely do so
they construct a road to Paris and
nccssary tnrougii mo .anon to a con-
nection wilh the ""Frisco." Thcso threo
extensions ought to be inado soon and a
fourth one in a southwesterly direction
subsequently. Thus building iu four
directions until It should reach tho
liulf New Mexico St. Louis and old
Muxico. the Texas Trunk would become
the grainiest railroad system in the
State; it would bo controlled largely by
Dallas capital nnd hence preeminently
a Dallas railroad. Kvory dollar put Into
such a road would pay if not directly
by doubling the value of Dallas property
nlanv times over. Dallas needs more
railroad connections. Let her spare cap-
ital and her inlliienco extend the Trunk
northeast northwest southeast and
southwest. CmUN.
