RECALL INITIATIVE
AND REFERENDUM
Chicago March 4. Hei;e are
the things William J. Hryan told
the United IVess tonight must be
done by the democrats at the
coming extra session of congress
in order to insure further demo-
cratic success:
Press the Canadian reciprocity
agreement.
Revise the tariff schedule by
schedule with the object of low-
ering the cost of living.
J'rointe legislation looking to-
ward the initiative referendum
and recall.
Submit the question of direct
election of senators to-tbe-ftate
legislatures.
Restore popular confidence in
republican government.-.
"I do not believe" said Mr.
Hryan. "that these measures will
result in direct government. The
people are willing to trust their
public servants but they want to
retain control of them.
"Xl.e extra session of congress"
will be a most peculiar one. A
denrKTiitic bouse will be called
upo to enact into laws a repub-
lic! Ii platform pledge which a
re Cibliean president demanded in
vai of his own party when it was
inpower."
LMr. Hryan declined to discuss
"Senator's" Hniley's resignation
and siibseipient withdrawal of
the resignation because of "po-
litical ethics" although it is well
known that Hryan and P.ailey
were never congenial political
bedfellows.
llr. Hryan was the guest of
honor and principal speaker at
the reception and dinner of the
Southern Club of Chicago in the
Lpvptian room of the Auditor-
ium Hotel tonight. His address
was si'iiii-huiiioroiis. He lauded
tin- South and its men and wo-
men. WHAT C0NGRES3

A gathering of OOHO farm ani-

worth going to see. The horses
at this show will include some of
the choicest importations of the
great stables of the North and
West many of them rated in val-

valuable animals go to a show
they are accompanied by veteri-

health closer than if they were
human beings. About 12000 cattle
and 1800 hogs will lend their
presence to swell the exhibition
