I.. McDonald.
Mr. McDonald planted one and
seven-eighths acres of sugar beet
on this irrigated farm three miles
north of Hereford. In October he
harvested thirty tons of fine beets
from this acreage. Samples were
sent to the chemist refinery at John-
stown Colo. who reports thut the
sugar content was fourteen and a
half per cent. He. expressed it as
his opinion that this content was
higher than the general average of
Colorado sugar beets.
Mr. McDonald Rives some inter-
esting facts regarding this experi-
ment. About half the patch of
ground used was old alfalfa ground
and this ground produced much bet-
ter beets and more of them than the
remainder of the plot. This con-
vinces Mr. McDonald that alfalfa in
connection with other experiments
and is the thing to use for any follow
crop as the alfalfa enriches the soil
and makes it more productive. He
has just finished plowing up some
more land which has been in alfalfa
fur the past eight years. The beets
raised this year were irrigated three
times and turned out to be good size
and good type. Thoy will be fed to
cattle this winter.

It is to be regretted that the secre-

difficult to conceive of a more de-j

The psychology is bad. F.ven those
