W. W. Urftily former Clerk ol Wise coun-
ty write:
"Was glad tliut some effort wes on foot
fur our prolecilon fur recent eent fully
froTe to u thai lomcthing roust be done
or the country will be abandoned by our
people. About 'JO or S5 Indian enme to
Armstrong's on Willow C'reok in Wise
county. Armstrong fought thetn; killed
' and icalped one Indian. They then nt-
tacked an old man hi ion and two negro
men. They killed all of thorn hut one ne-
gro and be I bcliere ia mortally wounded.
They then came to the Penrce Woodward
place "ne of ibe girl was going to the
well after wnlcr about one hundred yards
from Ibe bouse. The Indians attacked her
and lanced her several time. Blie was
rescued by the bravery of her two brothers
Roily and Henry. The Indians took
threee head of horses from that place
They then proceeded to J. 13. Floyd' run a
pony up to Ibo house (the family in the
house) and took it off. They then traveled
the road toward Pcoutur; camo upon Hon-
ion and Dean who bad left town that eve-
Ding for Jack county. Tlio Indians pur-
ued them two miles but they Inn do their
" escape. . They then went to 'tlio Thorn
place; Olcnn Holsel lien. Blunton and
Lansing Hunt were in the lot; they ran to
the bouse and the Indians surrounded it;
they bad a fight ; the Indians were repulsed
with three supposed lo be badly wounded.
The Indians took off nearly all their horses.
The boys acted bravely the women encour-
aging the boys during the fight acted the
heroine fully. They lien went to John
' 3bb'a killed and scalped Mi 5 Jiabb. car-
ried off two of herjiltle children and left
one. They also look off Mrs. Lizjie Roberts
who was living with Mrs. Uitbb. They shot
hogs calves sheep and horses; look off
everything from the house they wanted.
The news camo lo town very soon. About
i 25 nien went in pursuit of them lmmediate-
Jy but tho Indians traveled day and night
and made their escape as usual. Our men
followed them lu3 miles; their horses gave
out and they returned worn out and dis-
couraged. The citizens ore nil leaving
that settlement. We are all anxious that
something may be done for us quickly to
save the country. Urge the Governor to
organize the troops immediately and put
them in the field for action."
.. Hugh McKcmie Treasurer of Denton
county writes Beptomber 2Ulh 18li(i:
- "Indians are very troublesome. Have
been in our county on Duok Creek and
drove off a good deal of stock. Something
must Jie done soon or we are ruined."
Col. Otis 0. Welch of Denton writos
from Denton Texas Sept. 20th 1806 1
''We have no news of interest except In-
dian news. It is reported that they have
driven off a large number of . horses from
this county belonging to Ilrawly Wright '
Eddlcman ot al. Judge Dougherty has
called a meeting of the citizens at this iowu
on next Wednesday to devise means for
our own protection It seems hard that
neither the Fed ral or Stale Government is
willing to protect the people of the frontier.
Why the Senate should have hesitated to
pass tho House bill appears strange to our
people. I see many who are very keen to
have nn Emigration Bureau to induce peo-
. ' pie to eome lo the State are unwilling to
vote money to protect them after they ar-
rive or those who are already here; but I
suppose they with all the settlements made
in their section of Iho State. Out upon
such selfishness. A State (hut cannot or
rather will not protect its citizens is tin.
worthy the name of Government and a
Legislature that can calmly read the ro-
ports of the murder rape and rohhory of
the people and weigh money ngniiisl blood
and Emigration schemes ngaiiit protection
of it borders is a disgrace to the State a
blot on humanity and deserves the execra-
tion and anathemas of the civilized world."
Dr. Hiram Unity writes from Bjllvur
Denton county Sept. 27th 180G:
. ".The Indians fifty in number (counted)
uiooaed Spring Creek uudkillod Mr. Mor-
rison; crossed Duck Cro-k near Julicn
Ocsi's with about three hundred head of
horses. Every body in that part of (he
pounty are preparing to move to the interi-
or before the next full moon. Unless pro-
tection is had the frontier line will be cast
jjflhe.towu of Denton wilhiu oue month."
And he advises tho north-western mem-
her of the Legislotui to hasten heme lo
.protect tbier families. He is no alarmist
' and states nothing but fads and circum
lances which when known are bound to
.carry the convictions of his own mind to
the mind of all reasonable men.
Another gentlemen writes that the Indi-
an drpve tiOO head of homes from Deniou
bounty in their late raid. '
- A gentleman writing from Cooke county
.say: .
"Our people have already been driven lo
aespair oviug 10 me iow nnj tardy move-
meat of the power that bo in renderitig
tbeui lh froteeiioa that i due lea brove
aed generous people. The Indian are
mora frequent In their visits more savage
fu tbeir treatment and mora powerful in
aiumbars. The only alternative left with
ibe present lights that bear upon us for
protection is to fall back lo the interior
aud let ethers settlements compose the
border. Voa must do all you can. Pro-
tection w awi have and that immediate-
ly or our couutry will be gone. Within
he last Ave days a parly of about one hun-
dred Indiana visited the western boundary
. ot this and the eastern part of Montague
county driving off a large herd af horses
and cattle literally clearing the whole
. country of stock where they go. A small
party ha started in pursuit but in lh
abseneo of any rgaaiiatioa I have bat lit-
