and have given many kind words of cheer
and of comfort. To all who have thus aided
ifls our cordial and hearty thanks are given.
Hut despite of many encouragements wo
have had very many draw backs. The fail-
ure of the publishers here .0 abide by Iheir
contract forced us .0 buy on establishment
.and commence the publication ourselves
though wo had no experience and 110 knowl-
edge of the business whatever. Add .0 Ibis
that sickness and bereavement kept the ed-
itor out of tlio ollice for over llireo months
at the most critical period of our enterprise
And some idea may be formed of the dilli-
cullies under which we have labored.
2d. The great irregularity of the mails)
and Ihe Deputations of ofliciuls liavo caused
ns very heavy losses both iu money aud
Magazines. In nearly every case we have
assumed the losses of both kinds mi l have
re-supplied Magazines cvon lo tlis extent
of four hundred in a single 111 011 til.
8d. In order lo dovelope nod foster na-
tive tnlenl wo have adopted one fonluro
peculiar to this magazine. With the excep-
tion of tin occasional selected poem all our
articles lire original contributions from
Southern writers and paid for at the high-
est rates ever adopted at the South. Moie-
pver we use ouly Southern pnpur and nil
(he employees in cur office of every grade
uro from the Suiflh. Under these circum-
stances il could hardly be expected thai the
literary excellence the 'typography and
the mechanical finish Blioiild compare fa-
vorably with iiingivziuss of a wider range.
But we have no apologies for the literary
character of our Monthly. We beliuvo thin
there is as much talent at the South as iu
any part of tlio world. Our contributors
nv ipfnrrni7pil us nniont? the first in the
Union. Their articles would do honor to
any periodical in the whole country.
fith. In order 10 bring tho Mngaziiio with-
in the reach of our impoverished people and
especially of our poor soldiers wo put it
down at a lower price than that of any
monthly of a sim.liir size and character.
It was believed by many of our most judi-
oious friends that the enterprise could not
bo sustained nt tl eso low figures. Uut
cheap as tho magazine has been nearly 0110
third of our subscribers hi ve failed to pay
us owing ptobably to the extreme poverty
of the Son Hi and it may be to otlicrcauses.
Notwithstanding ihcso difficulties mid
embarrassments we have resolved to per-
severe in what we believe to be good work;
iind we will still keep our terms at the pre-
sent low rales. We have determined too
to Illustrate tho uiagiuitiejto tho extent ol'
our ability; every month if well sustained
otherwise as wo can afford il. Forties
therefore whose term expires with the.
April number and who iuiend to renew
subscriptions would oblige us by doing so
immediately in order that we may judge
of our ability to make the unigaziuo muic
attractive. We huvo made satisfactory ar-
rangements to secure the very best priming
binding and finish for the ensuing ycat.
"Our political (.pinions and preferences
are well known. Our first love belongs nt
home; but believing that tho peace happi-
ness and prosperity of the South are now
indissolubly couuectcd with the Union we
occord hearty obedience to a C'onstitti
tional government and extend cordially a
fraternal hand to every friend of a Consti.
tional Union. HILL 111 WIN & Co.

The Xftw State. We find the question
being agitated to some extent by a few in-
dividual to form a new State in North-
eastern Texas commencing with the South-
ern lino of l'anula county running west to
the lirojos thence north to somo unknown
point.
As lo a division of Ihe State wo Inter-
pose no particular objection ; but the man-
ner of doing it is a different thing. Let
the citizens in convention do the work and
send it to the Congress of the United States
properly adjusted. The idea of a few dis-
appointed men making a Western Virginia
movement of it is .00 absurd to entertain
(or a moment. Who wants to bp Governor?

General Sheridan has ordered a military
commission to assemble on the 15th tor the
trial of Mr. Walker and such other
persoiiB as may bo properly brought before
it. This is the first uiilitury commission
fur the trial of civilians ordoretlTiudcr the
new law.
The l'icny mie understands that Sheridan
"has received instructions from Washing-
ton to proceed under his own construction
of tho law until tho opinion of the Attorney
General is rendered."
