THE JEWISH MONITOR
Friday September 12 1919
THE JUDAISM OF A BUSINESS
MAN.
By A. C. Ratshesky President Twen.
ty-Sixth Council Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations.
Modem Judaism is highly practical
and should appeal to the man of bus-
iness. Here and there the Jews have been
asked to abandon the warm invigorat-
ing sunshine of world-civilization and
to return to the dark alleys of the
Ghetto. There are substantial explan-
ations for this but history proves
that this tendency is not a good one.
The decline of the Chinese was due
largely to the fact that they idealized
the past and minimized the import-
ance of the present and future. Other
peoples of other lands have suffered
because of a similar attitude. The ef-
fect of this adoration of the Past is to
turn the attention from the vital facts
of modern life to an enervating con-
templation of things gone. This poli-
cy perverts a man's ambition and saps
his vigor. It makes a dreamer out of
a man of action. Instead of doing
things he is content to recall what
has been done.
Our Present Needs No Apology.
In addition to its weakening effect
upon men this policy of living in the
Past is depressing to a people like
the Jews. Our Past is great and glor-
ious but our Present needs no apology.
In the century that the Jew has been
freed from the Ghetto he has shown
such marvelous development such
tenacious industry that even his tra-
ditional enemies have been forced to
acknowledge him as an equal. In spite
of poverty race prejudice and even
social discrimination the Jew has ris-
en to the top proving to the world and
to himself that centuries of dispersion
have not weakened his mind and heart
but have actually strengthened them.
If there is any people which need not
excuse the present by boasting of the
past it is the Jewish people.
I do not overlook or neglect what
the Jew has been. The law of Moses
the wars of David the genius of Solo-
mon and the wonderful prophecies of
Isaiah I admire and appreciate. But
I nm more interested in the vital prob-
lems which face the Jews of today and
which will confront them tomorrow.
These problems are much more threat-
ening than when the last council met.
Then the war was still in progress and
we were concerned chiefly with the
winning of the war and administering
relief. Now the war is over and won
but the dangers of peace are perhaps
even greater than those of war. We
are facing the most serious crisis in
the history of the United States. The
old world is in chaos; the new world
is in grave danger. If it is saved it
will be through the patriotic and single-minded
work of all Americans re-
gardless of political religious or oth-
er affiliations.
At this very hour the duty of the
modern Jew is to guard his country
and to help himself. He needs all his
energies all his ingenuity and all hii
courage to conquer the evils which are
showing themselves in this land.
It is the mission of Judaism to reach
the Jewish youths of America and to
enlist their hearts and their minds in
the work which is before us. This is
real construction work as vital and as
nificant question to put to this assem-
bly than this: "What can we do for
our country and for ourselves?"
As I see it the first battle which we
must fight is for liberty of thought
and speech. This is one of the most
fundamental of human rights and one
which has caused many revolutions in
history. It is inherent in all free peo-
pies and while it has always been one
of tin1 bases of Americanism it is be-
inu: threatened with annihilation at
this very hour. America has been tol-
erant indulgent and even careless.
This country has become the stamping
ground for all sorts of cranks and rad-
icals and their attacks upon our in-
stitutions have become so serious
that many Americans are advocating
the repeal of the right of free speech.
They think to improve conditions by
forbidding men to talk and to eradi-
cate evils by force.
It is the right of every man to speak
out upon vital questions. It is more
than his rii'ht it is his duty. If an ac
live minority is alone heard and others
keep silent then the world is likely to
conclude that the speaking minority
represents the whole. This is particu-
larly true when that active minority
openly declares to the world that it
speaks for the whole. But those who
have kept silent should not complain
that a few have assumed a leadership
which does not exist. They should
Know that such a state of affairs is of
their own making because they have
neglected to speak when the acts and
statements of the active element de-
manded a frank avowal of opinion on
the part of every person concerned.
Why are untold numbers of people
neglecting to do this? Is it because
of lethargy and carelessness? If so
then everyone of us should help rouse
such people to a true appreciation of
their duties and responsibilities. Is it
because they fear the ridicule and at-
tacks of those whom they oppose?
This is inconceivable. A World War
has been fought and won in the in-
terests of democracy and truth and
America cannot tolerate a situation
where any citiaen is intimidated into
silence. As Reform Jews and as Am-
ericans it is our duty to protect our-
selves and others against those who
practice such intimidation. It is for
us to preach universal free speech
and to safeguard that frank and
friendly discussion which is necessary
for the proper solution of any ques-
tion. Let us give a calm honest and
dispassionate opinion upon these great
issues and let us assure those who
differ from us that they are free and
welcome to do so.
The tendency for Jewish boys and
girls to drift away from the religious
atmosphere of their homes has in-
creased during the war. The tension
of war time has passed into a spiritual
and intellectual unrest which we must
combat. Spiritualism agnosticism
nnd even atheism are on the rapid in-
crease. In the secular field the rest-
less minds of some young Jews are
turning more and more to radical po-
litical movements which treaten their
country as well as their own existence.
The Jew has always stood at the head
of forward movements but standing
there he has always been in danger
of falling into perilous and unstable
situations.
The remedy is the strengthening of
family bonds. The boy or girl who is
under the spiritual influence of the
home will not drift into irreligious or

Practically every investment in a drilling oil company is a Ramble. When you convert your monev into stocks von
take a chance.
BUT DON'T STOP HERE!
Pause long enough to realize that if it were not for the few pioneer oil men who "took a chance" oil in Texas would never
have been discovered.
Think of the wealth hundreds of people have accumulated simply because they "took a chance."
The State of Texas has more acreage than has the fallen German Empire. And less than 3 per cent of Texas soil has
been tested for oil.
THINK!!! DOES THIS MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU?
It has so happened that great pools have been discovered in Hanger and Dodemona. "A chance" in a company here
lessens the element of risk 95 per cent. These are proven fields.
THE OIL IS THRERE
