PR. JACOBSON RESIGNS AS MIN-
ISTER OP B'NAI HON.
OF SHREVEPORT.
At meeting: of the B'Nai Zion con-
gregation Thursday night which was
called by Rabbi Moses P. Jacobson
Dr. Jacobson tendered his resignation
as minister to the congregation his
connection with the local temple to
take effect at the expiration of the
Feast of Booths holidays. His letter
of resignation is as follows:
Shreveport La. Oct. 7 1919.
Mr. Sidney L. Herold President and
members of the B'Nai Zion Congre-
gation: Shreveport La.
Brethren:
"I herewith respectfully and I may
add reluctantly request the congre-
gation to release me from my con-
tract with it immediately with the
close of the present holiday season.
The reasons prompting this request
are wholly subjective. I feel that I
must have at least a years' rest from
the ministry and from all thought of
the ministry.
18 Years in Shreveport.
"My ministerial career covers now
a period of thirty-three years eigh-
teen of which I have spent in your
pulpit. The annual summer vacation
as I have time and again explained to
many of you has never been a vaca-
tion to me. On the contrary it has
been a period of but more concentrated
study for the work f the year ahead.
I have found the duties of the profes-
sion for myself at least both exacting
and unremitting. What has contributed
of recent years to accentuate their dif-
ficulty for me has been the deepening
impression that at least my ministry
here meets merely a formal function
and exerts but an inconsiderable influ-
ence upon individual life and charac-
ter. Under these circumstances in
my preparation for the pulpit which
I regard after all the most iportant
and fundaentally the only sanctioning
element in the ministry. I seem to my-
self to be losing somewhat in spontan-
ity .Perhaps a year or so of other em-
ployment should I discover any may
freshen by ardors.
Imperative Duty.
"My extended period of service
here has attached me warmly to this
field of Jewish work and has knit
me in bonds of close and intimate
friendship with the vast majority of
you. I believe I am warranted in the
statement that fully nine-tenths of
not only our congregational member-
ship but of likewise the entire Jew-
ish community reciprocate toward
me the cordial sentiments I enter-
tain toward them. That my leaving
here will be sincerely deplored by
so great a proportion of you has I
assure you made it exceedingly pain-
ful to me to come to a conclusion
which seems to me the imperative
duty I owe alike to your best inter-
ests and my own spiritual wholesome-
ness. "The only solace I have in leaving
is that I am not abandoning an un-
finished work. The congregation is
in a flourishing condition. It has a
large membership and the prospect
of bounding growth in the astonish-
inb prosperity that has come to our
city. The membership is likewise an
intelligent membership aspirant in
all cultural lines stalwartly Jewish
and generously Jewish. Your ser-
vice attendance too will compare
more than favorably with the best
average in American Israel.
"There is no reason why with the
present conditions in American I-

rael any rabbi should not be happy
in your ministry and none why you
should not command for yourselves
the most gifted and consecrated in
the land. My psychology simply
' does not permit me to content myself
with the flattery yielded by mere
comparative evidence and forever oc-
casions me (lie disheartenment
which comes from a constant obses-
sion with ideal standards.
"From all personal prudential rea-
sons my departure here at this time
is my infinite loss and a serious mis-
take. From the consideration of the
congregation's future I hope and I
think it will eventually discover it-
self a source of congratulation.
"Thanking you all for these many
years of uniform kindness and cour-
tesy I am with heartfelt wishes for
both your congregational and person-
al prosperties. Yours fraternally
MOSES P. JACOBSON."
Deny Reports.
In commenting upon Dr. Jacobson's
resignation members of the local
congregation stated that it came as
a shock to them. The first intima-
tion that any of them had that the
enerable and beloved leader intend-
ed to sever his connection as pastor
came last Sunday night when he in-
formed some of his members that he
was considering such action. He
was strongly urged by members of
