Friday December 19 1919. THE JEWISH MONITOR Thrtt
when they will be permitted to emi-
grate. No matter where as long aa
they can get out. Many are looking
towards Russia where they hope to be
permitted to exist as soon as condi-
tions shall have become settled. All of
them would prefer Palestine but they
are afraid that they will be unable to
make a livelihood from the start. Any-
one can appreciate their desire to em-
igrate who has seen their inhuman
treatment. The Poles) have not the
slightest regard for religious or na-
tional sentiment. When labor is need
ed they pick the people up in the
streets without regard for age or con-
dition. I saw how Jews were corralled
In the streets on Saturday were pack-
ed into an automobile and taken to the
depot where they had to unload a car
of hay. Still more provoking are the
jokes in which the soldiers indulge. I
saw a man of 80 years held up by sol-
diers taken to a place where a hog
was killed and compelled to hold the
hog's tail while it was) being butcher-
ed and afterwards splashed with the
hog's blood. A group of Polish intel-
lectuals witnessing the scene found
it very amusing.
The question is: What will be the
end of all this? The only solution un.
fortunately is emigration. While
Morgenthau was in Poland the au-
thorities tried to prevent the worst
excesses but the case of Minsk shows
that even then this insincere policy
was not always successful.
Jewish communial life in Eastern
Galicia is totally paralyzed. Censor-
ship suspension of traffic and the dis.
solution of the Jewish National Coun-
cil organized by the Ukrainian gov-
ernment ruined everything. The edu-
cational activities are the only re-
maining M!gn of communal life. I saw
school children who talked Hebrew
during their play. The Jewish "gym-
nasium" in Lemberg i. frequented by
trian government am; discharged by
several hundred boys. The best teach
ers formerly employed under the Aus-
the Poles arc teaching there. Unfor-
tunately there is already an overpro-
duction of intellectuals. The cities
warm with university graduates who
can find no occupation. Numerous law-
yers are idle because the courts have
suspended all activities. It will be im-
possible for anyone who ever lived in
civilezd Europe to exist in Poland.
LULLABIES FOR SOLDIERS.
Lullabies for soldiers whose minds
are sick! It's a new idea one of the
many scheme hatched by Rod Cross
musical directors at military hospitals
in this country who are trying to
bring men back to themselves through
the medium of melody. At Fort Sam
Houston. Texas an accomplished worn
n pianist with a trio (piano violin
and cello) plays three times a week
fit bedtime or after the mental pa-
tients have retired with the object of
quieting the men or putting them to
sleep.
FOOD FROM CLOTHING.
Ville-en-Tardenois France. Amer-
ican Red Cross clothing ami furniture
has juY been ronvertel into 1.702
hart 600 rabbits 10 cows and 27
goats. There are no magic about it
the supplies were sold and with the
money obtained the chickens rabbits
cows and goats were purchased for
the peasants of this devastated district.
