SPECIAL WEEKLY LET-
TER FROM NEW YORK
Ukranian Federation Unified An Un-
fortunate Accident to Colonel Cut-
lerThe Jewish Stage and the Jew-
ish Pre The Future of the Red
Mogen David.

At lait we have the beginning of
unity in the ranks of Ukranian Jewry
and after ircmingly endless wrang-
lings and differences all the commit-
ties have joined forces and will work
together toward calling a conference
soon which shall reorganize the Fed-
eration and start the practical relief
work for the Jews in the Ukraine.
The removal of the blockade against
Russia had much to do with the mat-
ter. Now that it is possible with en-
ergetic application to reach the great
Ukranian cities and through them the
vemaller towns and villages everyone
has felt that it would be a crime to
go on with time-consuming polemics.
Accordingly a committee of six rep-
resenting all the opposing elements in
the Federation met with the conven-
tion committee of the Federation it-
self and after lengthy debating
reached an understanding by which
the two committees were merged into
one committee of thirteen with the
duty of arranging for a convention aa
speedily as possible and in the mean-
time of preparing all the Ukranian
relief organizations and "Landsman-
schaften" for a comprehensive activ-
ity. The chairman of the committee
of thirteen is Mr. M. Meyerson a
Vice-President of the Hebrew Shelter-
ing and Immigrant Aid Society.
Colonel .Harry Cutler prominent
Jewish social worker and former
Chairman of the Jewish Congress is
seriously ill as a result of a sudden
friralytic stroke which attacked him
Vtst after heviryj left a committee
meeting of the Jewish Congress called
tn discuss the convening of a session
in the near future. Colonel Cutler is
now under the care of physicians in
New York who give hopes for his
recovery.
During recent years Colonel Cutler
hss sacrificed himself for Jewish wel-
fare and social work. It was not an
unusual thing to And him in New York
at hA first conference at ten o'clock

press to criticize the Jewish stage.
But during the past week the tables
have been turned and a Jewish actor
of the Second Avenue Theater has
launched an attack upon Abraham Ca-
han editor of the "Forward."
Cahan it appears wrote an article
in the "ForwarJ" commenting on the
work of Ludwig Satz whom he ad-
mitted to be a talented actor. At the
same time he wrote that Satz was
not a comedian but a dramatic actor.
This article occasioned a series of let-
ters on the subject which appeared in
the "Forward." All this was done
without intending harm. hTe "For-
ward" feels the pulse of its public.

Whi n Satz becutre popular and the
public took to discussing him the
"Forward" wrote about him.
Satz however does not want his
reputation as a comedian harmed. At
th? benefit performance in his honor
last Wednesday night the young actor
made the stage his platform for a bit-
ter attack upon the "great editor"
who "does not understand the differ
ence between a clown and a come-
ian" etc.
Naturally this occasioned a sensa-
tion There is talk that the "Forward"
iray exact its revenge and it is being
debated now whether Satz' harangue
against the paper showed more cour-
ure or audacity.
Upon the convention in Philadelphia
called for thv first week in February
hangs the fate of the American Red
Mo;;cn David.
In the national office of the Amer-
ican Red Mogen in New York there
are now taking place series of meet-
ings and conferences to determine
Uor the future exigence and the
further work of this organization. The
consensus of opinion seems to be in
tl.c direction of attracting to the
American Red Mogen new strength
and of using its activity for wider re-
lief work and for helping the war or-
phans in Europe.
