Bicycle larcenies are becoming a luc-
rative target by thieves on Ft. Hood.
There are many situations that can lead
to the theft of a bicycle but opportun-
ity appears to be the determining fac-
tor whether one becomes a victim of
loss.
IN THE PAST it was possible to
avoid such a loss during the daylight
hours but the criminal-minded indi-
vidual has become more bold and
mobile and will not hesitate to abscond
with our property at any time of the
day or night. The greatest tool in our
inventory of prevention measures is
to properly secure our property when
not in use. What does secure really
mean? Obviously security of a bicycle
means much more than a simple lock
and chain through the body and
wheels. In today's society with a pro-
liferation of pickup trucks and vans
there is no difficulty in quickly loading
and transporting a bicycle lock chain
and all or even a motorcycle.
It's just not worth the effort or time
for a thief to attempt to steal a bicycle
that is permanently or temporarily
attached to an immovable object.
Equally disturbing to a criminal is the
thought that he might be required to
break into your garage or your quarters
to get at the merchandise.
ANOTHER EFFECTIVE TOOL in
the fight against theft of property is
proper marking or identification.
Although many parts on a bicycle are
interchangeable a properly-marked bi

cycle one that is marked on the pedal
shaft is very effective in preventing
the property from being stolen since
the individualized marking will assist
investigators in locating your property.
An engraver properly utilized to im-
print your social security number driv-
er's license number or even a secret
code can contribute to your recovering
your property on a timely basis. En-
gravers are available from the III Corps
Crime Prevention Section. Further in-
formation may be obtained by calling
685-5813 or dropping by Bldg. 103.
Finally registering your bicycle with
the post Military Police is an important
factor in helping to prevent a theft of
property. Provided you have taken
these precautions marking securing
and registering your bicycle you can
contribute to convincing a thief that
your bicycle is not the one he would
want. The desire to steal is ever present
but you have the ability and the tools
to channel that desire in a different
direction.
Preventive Tips
Mark your bicycle for ready identifi-
cation.
Secure your bicycle properly to a
fixed object.
Register your bicycle with your local
Military Police.
Stay alert in the neighborhood and
report criminal behavior or suspicious
activity to the Military Police.
