Sgt. Audie Murphy Club
focuses on helping soldiers
When many people think
of the Sergeant Audie Mur-
phy Club inductions and ac-
colades for noncommissioned
officers may be what comes
to mind.
Members of the club want
to change that perspective
and use the club as a vehicle
to develop and maintain
qualities of outstanding
NCOs.
“We want to be known not
for going to boards but for
making a difference” said
Staff Sgt. Jacques Laro-
chelle S-4 NCO-in-charge
for 2nd Bn 82nd Field Artil-
lery 1st Cavalry Division
and newly-elected president
of the Sergeant Audie Mur-
phy and Sergeant Morales
Club.
Part of making that dif-
ference is in providing a
communication channel for
soldiers Larochelle said.
“The 1st Cavalry Division
has a good program” he
said. “The division sergeant
major meets with members
about concerns of the sol-
diers they work with.”
One recent change the
club was involved with was
changing family time from 4
p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays
Larochelle said.
“Things like that make the
soldier feel like someone
cares.”
The club also helps the
Better Opportunities for Sin-
gle and Unaccompanied Sol-
diers program by acting as a
liaison.
“Not many soldiers get a
change to talk to the ser
ices
February 24f 1994
geant major or commanding
general” Larochelle said.
“It’s good to be able to ex-
press an opinion from the
soldier.”
Another goal of the club is
to be a volunteer organiza-
tion working with programs
like the Boy Scouts and
Adopt-a-School.
Since the board of officers
for 1994 was just elected and
the by-laws just passed spe-
cifics of these goals still need
to be worked out Larochelle
said but plans include a
fundraiser in March.
Since the club wasn’t of-
ficially recognized on post
its activities had been lim-
ited.
Members of the club are
NCOs in the grades of corpo-
ral through sergeant first
class who are nominated by
their soldiers or supervisors.
The club is not limited to
soldiers in those grades
however Larochelle said.
Honorary memberships are
available for NCOs in the
grade of master sergeant or
above who exemplify the ide-
als of the club.
Associate memberships are
for non-military personnel
who have worked with the
club and who also exemplify
the ideals and traditions of
the club.
Larochelle hopes that the
club with support from com-
manders and sergeants
major can make a world of
difference since the club
benefits all levels of the
chain of command.
‘We want to do more than
be a club where people go to
boards and become mem-
bers” Larochelle empha-
sized.
