liancy, but the rustic. English farmer
la bettor schooled in the beauties of
nature than half of the young jour-
nalist* of New York City," he said
According to Dr. Powys, a long
stop in the direction of acquiring cul-
ture is to realise that you have the
privilege of having a thought and of
defending it. You should certainly
have a philosophy of your own about
life and death, the object of life,
beauty, sex, the relation of children
to their parents, and all of that im-
portant never ending line of ques-
10ns. It is not necessary that you
proclaim your thoughts to the
world; people would not understand
you. If anyone attacks your position,
defend it playfully, ironically, humor-
ously.
"The study of ustronomy and the
sciences are indeed cultural, but it
seems to me that culture comes
primarily from the arts."
Dr. Powys concluded his talk by
making a book list which included
the names of such authors as Goethe,
Pater, and Arnold for the person who
would seek self-culture, uttering a
prayer that culture might always go
hand in hand with peace.
