WANTS TO TRY A NEW LEADER
While Mr. Bryan has already been defeated twice as
the democratic candidate for he presidency the fact that
his position upon all questions is so well known and that
his convictions are based upon tho highest patriotism
will In our opinion make him a stronger candidate than
any man comparatively unknown. Should Senator Cul-
berson or some statesman of equal prominence be chos-
en the matter would be different but there seems to bo-
n strong effort to name Governor Johnson of Minneso-
ta ob the standard' bearer. A recent press dispatch from
the northwest says:
Col F. 0. Robertson of Spokane assistant
VBU?d States district attorney of thlB state dur-
ing the last Cleveland administration formally
launchod the presidential boom in Washington
of Governor John A. Johnson of Minnesota In
Seattle today 'at Hotel Butler. Mr. Robertson
was democratic candidate from eastern Washing-
ton for representative in congress In 1900 and
no man Is more widely known In democratic poli-
tics. "The west" said Col. Robertson "Is now the
conservative element of the community and it is
my Judgment that the west will be for Johnson
of Minnesota along conservative lines. I would
not detract In the slightest froto-W J. Bryan. But
it Is my belief that the south and west will find In
the last analysis that Johnson is the man for the
Job Mr. Johnson can be depended upon to carry
his own state Minnesota as well as Wisconsin
and Iowa. Col. Bryan has thousands of friends In
tho west who are loyal to him. but I believe that
If Taft Is nominated by the republicans the west
as well as the south will select Governor John-
sop of Mlnnesato as the man to bo the democrat-
ic candidate."
Governor Johnson is a good man and won a notablo
vlstory In winning his present place In'fin election which
returned republicans to all other offices but he -is nob
Mr Bryan's equal In statecraft nor experience. It is
dangerous to pluco great responsibility upon those who
liave not had the proper training as this state has learn-
ed In the election of a man to the hen dot its government
and to select a man with so little experience as tho Min-
nesota governor to the head bt tho greatest nation on
earth might not appeal to tho majority of the electors
of the United States. We trust that the Johnson boom
will not result In placing him at the head of our nation-
al ticket at this time.

OPPORTUNITIES FR YOUNG MEN
Our frlentj and neighbor editor McCarty of tho Albany
News Is not an old man but he has seen afow things
and remembers them. Not only that but ho can toll
vhat ho knows in so plain a manner that the fool need
not mistake his meaning. In the current Issue of tho
Hews he points' out the fact that the world has not shut
up shop against the young man who has tho goods that
It wants but Is as eager to get anything worth while as
It ever was. Ho says:
Just think of It Martin Littleton only a few
years ago was a section hand on the T. & P. rail-
road in Parker county. Today he Is the leading
counsel -in the famous ThaW trial In the city of"
New York. Without any bluo blofyl in his Veins
or rich relatives to boost him to tho top round
he has climbed up in splto of poverty and today

FIVE CONVENTIONS
TO CONVENE IN ABILENE WEDNI8-
DAY JANUARY 16.
PflQBRAM FOR THE MEETINGS
THE GUARANTY OF BANK DEPOSITS
Of tho best known state papors the Houston Post and
Fort Worth Star oppose tho government guaranty of
national bank deposits while tho Dallas-Galveston News
and Fort Worth Record advocate it. Tho Post has boon
quite vlgouous In Its opposition to tho proposed measure
while tho News and tho Record aro equally zealous In
advocating It. Recently tho Dallas Nows said:
To tho Houston Post belongs the honor of of-
fering the best argument yet heard in favor of
insurance of deposits. It says thattho adoption of
the insurance scheme for state banks "would per-
force cause a rush on tho part of the depositors
owning 1155000000 In the national banks to get
their money la tho Insured banks." It won't bo
as bad as that of course but If the scheme is re-
garded by the Post as warranted to attract tho
money of the uninsured banks into the insured
ones what will It do In the waypf attracting tho
money hoarded outside of any bank? And yet the
Post is opposed to the Insurance of deposits idea.
In our judgment tho News has the Post in the hole In
this argument and we can not discern a getting out
place for the Houston paper. Confidence is the great
thing desired and that is what will be restored and kept
intact If tho government takes steps to see that depos
its shall not be lost. Let us try it.
l.
In the "asset bank currency" plan everything Is plac-
ed In the hands of the comptroller of the currency which
13 one of Its most objectionable features. It places en-
tirely too much power In the hands of the administration.
The amount is to be limited to two hundred and fifty
millions which meang that the pets of the administra-
tion will get all the issue. Attention Is called to the fact
that In the Issuance of the emergency currency the de-
positors may and would often bo left out In the cold
for the cream of tho assets of any bank that Issues this
currency will be put up for It and If the bank should go
to the wall they would bo deprived of juBt so much of
the assets as were thus used and would rarely get even
a tithe of their money back. Herein lies the disinclina-
tion of banks to make rediscounts as the depositors
know that this means the elimination of a certain amount
of the collateral by which they are protected in case of
a failure. W. J. Bryan the democratic leader Is making
a' vigorous fight against the assest currency measure.
The cold northern winters are driving hundreds of fam
iliese to warmer climates some not being able to longer.
endure the rigors of the storm king. Texas will get
many of these families some two hundred from the Da-
kotas and Minnesota all heads of families leaving on one
train the first of last week to seek homes In this state.
Speaking of this movement the San Antonio Express says:
"This is only an Initial moye there being many mcfre to
follow. The immigration from the northwest Is of the
scrt that Texas needs and will appreciate! Here these
farmers who come from the bleak north will find that
they can farm all the year instead of being penned up
more than half of the time by snow and Ice." The Pan-
handle will get many of these farmers and so will
southwest Texas but so far as we are advised Central
West Texas is making no concentrated move to capture
iny of this very desirable Immigration. Better get at it.
- "';
"Tho Ablleno Commercial Club did well to secure tho
state meeting of the nut growers and horticulturists.
West Texas Is unusually well adapted to horticulture
and Interest In Its possibilities should be fostered. Tho
excellent apples raised In Eastland and Jane's counties
last yearrto say 'nothing of the many kinds of fruit pro-
duced on the celebrated French farm near Balrd show
what! can be done when a little effort is expended" says
tho Fort Worth Telegram. There are-tens of thousands
of acres of the finest apple land within a short distance
of Abllone that will in a few years be producing tho fi-
nest quality and the greatest quantity of apples per acre
in tho world and we Bay it advisedly. Tho question is
not whether this will be done but who will do it and win
the fortuneB awaiting the men who will take adyantago of
the offered opportunity for the profitable growing of this
and other fruits. Any man' who reads may becomeof the
lacy tribe and many will do bo.
Two editors nre most talked of possibilities for the de-
mocratic nomination for the presidency William Jen-
nings Bryan and Governor Johnson. Aro we to expect
a general rush of tho fraternity for office If either of these

Albuquerque Now Mexico recently put In to force a
high license law $1500 and thirty saloons went out qf
business. That was a good move and as wo Btated a few
days ago prohibition wIl soon follow In many of tho
towns wnless.the present wave recedes. Cheap drinking

THE FAEMER'S WIFE
Is very jarefalabout her churn. She scalds it thoroughly after using
and gives it a sun bath to sweeten it. She knows that if her churn is
sour it will taint the butter that is made in it. The stomach is a churn.
In the stomach and digestive and nutritive tracts are performed pro-
cesses which are almost exactly like the churning of butter. Is it not
apparent then that if this stomachchurn is foul it makes' foul all which
is put into it?
The evil of a foul stomach is npt alone the bad taste in the mouth
and the foul breath caused by it but the1 corruption of the pure current
o blood and the dissemination of disease throughout the body Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery make3 the sour and foul stomach
sweet. It does for the stomach what the washing and sun bath do for
the churn absolutely removes every tainting or corrupting element.
In this way it cures bjotches pimples eruptions scrofulous swellings
sores or open eating ulcers and all humors or diseases' arising from
bad blood.
To aid in healing old sores or ulcers
