ACETYLENE OAS LIGHTS.
Coming Into Fivor forToaa Llfhtiof
and Fuel lor Stotc.
A great many towna in the .South
and west that inetalletl electric
lighta years ago have tired of them
because the plants hare in foine
cases run down and give poor
vice atid in many of these towns
and in others that have never had
lights acetylene town lighting
plants are now Uing initialled.
WhitewrigbtTexa Bowie Texas
and several towns in the Indian
Territory are among the number.
Acetylene town lights have had
their greatest run however in Ne-
braska and adjoining States. The
following item is from "The Graph-
ic" published at Atkinson Ne-
braska: About six months has now elaps-
ed since Atkinson became blessed
with an Acetylene illuminating
and heating plant and in view of
its wonderful succei in operation
the "Graphic" considers a brief
resume of the name appropriate at
this time.
The Atkinson Heat and Light
Company was organized and in-
corporated last December with a
capital of $5000.00 the stock-
holders all being local business
men. A suitable building was
erected and a 1.000-light "Mon-
arch" plant metalled. Two miles
of pipe was laid then which has
been greatly increased cine?. Pipe

from one and one fourth to two
and one half inches is used for
mains.and service boxes are placed
at each lot from which the build-
ings ore piped with three-eighths-inch
pipe. The burners Dfed are
"quarter foot to three quarter foot"
that is of a size that will con-
eume that much gas per hour.
The gas is sold by meter at one
and one half ct-nta i-r foot. Thus
the exnee of running a half foot
burner which has a l.nhiancy ol
twenty-five candle power and will
fill a large room full of bright white
light is three-fourths ol a cent per
hour.
To say that such lights at such
a price are giving unbounded satis-
faction to the people of Atkinson
is to put it mildly l'eople who
were at first pessimistic about it
do not now think of putting up a
new building without piping it for
gas at the same time. The gas is
fully as practical for heating pur-
pones as for illumination the same
gaa making a white flame with very
little heat for lighting or a blue
dame much hotter than any other
gas or gasoline tlame for cooking.
The difference is caused by a sim-
ple adjustment of the stoves used
which mixes more air with the gas
causing a blue flame. The local
company here reports that while
their receipts from lights are ne-
cessarily lighter at this time of the
year on account of the short even-
ings it is more than recompensed
by the increased com sumption for
rooking purpose. Housewives
who use it find it much more sat
isfactory than gasoline.being clean
safe and always ready for use.

stalled at Bell Elgin. Oakdale

mans Grove Dunbar Ba-rtt and
Newport we aUo un.lenUai-.il ne
gotiations are pt-nding with the
bufines tLen of Ainsworth.
"Graphic" ventures the assertion
that within a year or two nearly
every town on this line of road
will have a plant of this) kind.
Before buying this plant the lo-
cal company sent three of their
number to investigate the plants
in the above mentioned towns and
found them giving the best of sat-
isfaction and all citizens loud in
their praires.
At present Atkinson uses but
four arc lights the village trustees
fearing they would be too expensive
In put in more but after six
months' use the cheapness of them
i. Wn demonstrated to such an
extent that more will doubtless be
erected soon.
From W. E. Scott village clerk
we learn that during the month of
April the four lights cost $8.40
in May I7.C3 and in June. $7.35.
Thus it will be seen that the cost
is less than one-fourth that of
electricity while the quality of the
light ii much better. A newspaper
can be read a block away from
the light.
