THE POETRY OF GOOD ROADS;
There is a sentimental side to the
question of good roads.
For our part we would not make the
roads straight and on a dead level
even if we had the power and author-
ity to do so. Why a road as level as
a floor and as straight as a line would
become monotonous from sheer same-
ness. We want a road that winds in
And out among the pine clad hills and
through lanes that are mixed with
sunshine and shadow. We want to
drive slowly through the great arbor
eal cathedrals and look far ahead to j
where a bend In the road is in wait-
lng with new and agreeable surprises i
Every elbow of the country roads Ih dation followed
leEBly from the eternal hills. But we
go on and presently come to a field
by the roadside. It is a field of corn
and from somewhere in its rustling
depths we hear the morning call of
Bobwhite. The dew still lingers on
the morning glory that clings to the
rail fence and the air is fragrant with
the odors born of the dawn in the
country. On and on the road winds
away and away here it cuts deep into
the hills like the wrinkles in a care-
worn face and here it winds through
old fields hoary with years. No while
we want all the roads to be good we
also want them to retain at least some
of their old time ruggedness and poetic
sentiment. Houston County Times.

The Bryan Eagle says that Austin

institutions. Therefore the bond
amendment should be defeated.
Tell the truth brother. It has been

A depression is moving in over the
northwest which in turn is followed
by another area of high pressure over
the north Pacific coast. These move-
ments have been attended by local
showers in the extreme northwest in
the middle west Atlantic districts
and in the middle and eastern portions
of the cotton belt. In Texas and else
where the weather has been fair and
at time of report the skies were clear
over this state. The temperature has
fallen in the extreme northwest and
in the Ohio valley lower lake region
and Atlantic districts especially north
Atlantic but is rising in the middle
portions of the United States. Warm
weather continues in Texas and the
greater portion of the cotton belt and
unusually warm weather is reported
from Montana and the northwest.
