"In spite of the lowered prices I am
paying tho same market price for hogs
although I am pretty well stocked just
now J cannot say whether the price
will change in tho near future.
No Change On Beef. ..
Continuing Mr. Bertrand said:
"Just as" I anticipated there has been
no change in the prico the consumer
must pay for beef. The. present prices
will probably hold good throughout tho
winter. I am confident that the price
on bacons nnd hams will contlnuo at
the present low level. I attribute this
to tho lig corn crops in many states
at least that seems to be the generally
accepted theory for the lowering in
prices.
Better Than A Year Ago.
"Prices on bacon and ham are lpwor
now than they have been in two years.
All of last winter sawi tho prices re-
main at thirty tVo and twenty cents
respectively. Cured ham Is selling now
cheaper than I have known since I
went into business here."
Turkeys Still Sky-IHgh.
When the subject of turkeys was
mentioned Mr. Bertrand's face took on
a rueful aspect.
"rinn't. nak mo about tho price on
gobblers" ho ontreated "for they are
sky-high and likely t9 remain bo. l
would welcome a reduction as much as
any man but when wo pay tho produc-
er thirteen cents "for the live bird
feathers and all we are forced to make
tho price steep. Turkeys at this time
bring fifteen cents on the market and
when dressed tho consumer must pay
twenty centB per pound. Up to two
years ago they never went past fifteen
ents dressed In fact I am a llttlo
apprehensive that the price will see a
slight increase before tno winter is
over.
"I am at a loss to explain tho high
v prico on turkoys. Three years ago a
man could buy a fat gobbler for a dol-
lar and get lam dressed 'for a dollar
and a quarter Tliey) didn't weigh them
Jjy tho pound then cither. There cer-
tainly hasn't been any turkey famine-
sq far as I know.'Turkoy Is by far tho
most expenslvo diet but your families
will and musj bavo their turkey for
Thanksgiving and Christmas no mat-
ter if in so purchasing they beggar
themselves." '
