FRRM BRIEFS
By Wylie Roberts, Jr.
County Agricultural Agent
First, I want to say how much
I have appreciated working with
the people ill Montague County
as your County Agent for the
past twelve years. My best wish-
es go to Brooks Smith, your new
Agent. I will be watching and
keeping up with the happenings
here.

Many people have been asking
when is the time to spray pe-
cans. I'm sure the pecan nut
casebearer is the insect they
have in mind. Usually May 20-
25 is the time to spray for this
most damaging pecan insect.
There is only a period of four or
five days when spray applica-
tions will give control and that
is before the tiny worm enters
the tiny pecan nutlets. The date
for spraying may be earlier this
year.
This year there is a project
or demonstration underway in
the County in cooperation with
Uriel Randolph of the Fruit
Laboratory to tell exactly when
the applications should be timed
in this area. Montague County
is one of about 15 counties ill
the state cooperating on this
project. It amounts to banding
several trees and collecting the
larva as they pupate. The work
is being done in the Pete Cor-
ado pecan orchard at Montague.
Mr. Randolph and this office will
be keeping you informed of
this.

Speaking of pecans, the An-
nual Montague County Pecan
Clinic will be held on Wednes-
day, May 22 in the County Ex-
tension office at Montague. Dis-
cussion and demonstrations will
be held on all phases of pecan
management, including budding
and grafting.
