Blood needed for war effort

has both a support group and a 24-
hour hotline for local residents with
relatives and friends in the Middle
East.
Trained counselors are available
to those calling 1-800-234-3702.
United Blood Services in
Texarkana has urged potential
blood donors in the area to make
arrangements to donate blood soon,
due to the possible demand of
blood needed overseas.
According to community relations
director Eden Leach, one shipment
from the UBS Texarkana blood
bank went out Thursday and the
service is on standby to possibly
ship more.
"The focus of the situation is that
we have to make sure we are able
to normally supply our local hospi-
tals, separate and apart from any
extra we might be called upon to
send to the Middle East," she said
Friday. "In order to properly supply
our 17 area hospitals, we have to
draw between 75 and 80 units of
blood per day. Operation Desert
Storm may require an increase in
that amount."
Leach said that United Blood
Services has committed up to 50
percent of its blood supply to the
war effort.
"Donors can come by our offices
on College Drive in Texarkana to
give blood, or wait until a com-
munity blood drive is scheduled for
their areas. There will be such a
drive in Atlanta on Feb. 21."
She also reminded Queen City
High School students that their
blood drive is scheduled for Feb. 4
at the school. Linden-Kildare High
School has one set for Feb. 7.

Half of all American women over
age 65 are widows, according to
the National Institute on Aging
(N1A). One reason for this high
rate, the NIA says, has been the
pattern of women marring men
older than themselves. Another is
the difference in male and female
longevity: IJfe expectancy of those
born in the same year Is about
seven years longer for women than
for men.
