Whale Mystery

Scientist EeJieves Mammals
Left Land to Escape
Enemies.
Washington.—Although 'he great-
freat-ancestors of the whale and the
porpoise left Iheir lioiuei on the land
and mover! into the sea millions ot
yeu.s ago. the modern representative's
of the family continue to show heredl
tary t. aces of the old life.
Profound changes have taken place
in these bit- • seagoing mammals,
which are neither fish nor beasts, to
adapt them to their .vatei environ
uient. bui the proee.s of evolution
seems to lie still in progress.
How at I why the cetaceans, which
still suckle their young and .breathe
air direct like their less venturesome
cousins on land, quit a dry home for
a wet one is one of the mysteries of
past geologic sges. which for many
years has engaged the attention of
Hemington Kellogg, research associate
of the Carnegie institute of Washing-
ton.
May Have Found Refuge.
After careful study ot the anatomy
of present-day specimens and the f"S
sils of ey'lnc! species lie is ready to
observe:
"It is possible that Iti water they
may have found a refngt from ene
tales. Again, an abundance of food In
shallow water and along the shores
may have had an important influence.
"Some of the anatomical modifica-
tions which were tried out during geo-
logic time proved more successful
than others. As, a result, old species
continually disappeared and new ones
took their places." No traces of hind
legs have been found In living toothed
whales. although tliey appear, in unde-
veloped form. In the skeleton of one
found in Egypt which died at least
't.lMHl.'MWi years ago. and are present
today In the structure of whalehoue
whales, burled deep in rhe tlesh of
the hip region The bones, muscles.
hli>od vessels and nerves of the fore
ie.33 have been overlaid with blubber,
forming flippers to enable tlie whale
ro ascend, descend or turn, while t«>w
erfui hc.rizont.il flukes have been o>-
veloped a! 'he end of llie tiilt tu pro
vide a means of propulsion.
A blanket layer of f,-ii affords pro
rectlon against watet temperatures
much lower than those of ttie whale's
body, which Is only a few degrees
cooler than human blood heat.
To keep water from entering the
lungs while swimming with open
mouth or feeding, the nasal passage*
instead of leading Into tlie throat, as
In land animals, connect directly witi
the windpipe. The nostrils have beet,
pushed back from the snont to Hie
highest point of the head, the first
point to rise above the surface, and
are equipped with pockets and valves
to keep out water.
Sense of Smell Useless.
The eyes have become adjusted to
sight under water rallier than above
and have changed so as to withstand
the cold, the salt and the trememlou*
pressure encountered at great depths
amounting to OMn p ".inds to llie square
Inch '£20 fathoms down, 1.I7S pound*
at half a mile and 2.340 pounds at a
mile.
1'he sense of smell apparently bus
become gradually less useful, so in
some species the olefactory organs
have completely disappeared, while
In others which huve not yet, reached
the stage of evolution the structures
are present, but usually are unde-
veloped.
Like the eyes, the organ of hearing
has been radically changed on the
foundations of the old structure to
meet the requirement of responding to
water-borne sounds rather than those
carried on the air. Kven the external
ear which whales at one time pos-
sessed has almost disappeared, al
though In this respect, as Id others,
some species are more advanced to-
ward its elimination than others.

Soldiers Are Called
to Battle Wild Boar
Berlin.—Detachments of the Ger-
man army stationed in Tburlngin were
recently called Into action iigainst an
unusual enemy. They were sent Into
the neighborhood of Eichsfeld In the
Thuringian forest, not to put down an
Insurrection, hut to eradicate hun-
dreds of wild boars.
On the whole, the wild boar Is an
uncommon occurrence In German tor-
ests. Once he gets a chance to gain a
foothold, however, he multiplies rap-
Idly. Broods of 24 are known.
Near Eichsfeld, where the Thuringian
forest is skirted by mountains along
its northwest boundary, the wild boar
became a veritable plague. Efforts of
the farmers to rid themselves of it
proved unavailing. Tliey appealed to
the district commander of the relchs-
welir, or federal army. who. to the
Joy ot the troops, permitted them to
break the monotony of their military
life by going oti a hunt for wild boars.
The,casualties were all on the side of
the enemy.
